Day 17

Jan 17, 2026

Todayโ€™s tool

Creating natural phrasing

Assignment: Mark all phrase beginnings and ends in your music, and practice with exaggerated shaping.

Think of musical phrases like spoken sentencesโ€”they need to breathe, build toward important words, and resolve at the end. Today, identify the phrasing in your music. Mark beginnings and endings, then identify the โ€œpeakโ€ or most important moment in each phrase. Practice shaping each phrase to build toward this peak. Literally breathe at phrase beginnings and endings as if you were singing. Think of it this way: without phrasing, music sounds like a grocery list read in monotone; with it, music sounds like a beautiful conversation.
