Learning how to breathe
Assignment: Experiment with tempo in your musicโfind three places where slight changes enhance your expression.
Strict metronomic time is for practice, not performance. Today, experiment with tiny tempo variations that make music breathe. General principles: slight acceleration through ascending lines creates excitement; slight ritardando at phrase endings creates repose; holding back slightly before an important note creates anticipation. Try this exercise: play a phrase at a strict tempo, then play it with slight pushing and pulling. Record both and listen. The key is that tempo variations should feel organic. They should support your phrasing and harmony.
