Todayโs tool
Using a practice journal
Assignment: Start a practice journal to document your time spent, goals achieved, and areas for improvement. Amp up your journal by adding an audio and video component to the written part.
Donโt just write what you practicedโdocument your practice in multiple ways to gather different types of information. A written journal captures goals, time spent, and problem areas. Audio recordings reveal what your playing actually sounds like (often different from what you hear while playing). Quick video clips show your hand position and posture. By reviewing all of these elements, youโll spot patterns youโd otherwise miss, like โI always rush this sectionโ or โmy left hand drops when Iโm tired.โ This approach will help you measure both progress and also persistent problems, so youโre not fooling yourself about your practice quality.

Autumn ColoUrs, by Hannah Haynes
This piece is the first etude in A Suite of Botanical Etudes, a collection of original, botanically-themed etudes by Hannah Haynes. โAutumn Colorsโ is a satisfying beginning study on harmonic thirds.
