Learning from mistakes
Assignment: Keep an “error log” today—note every mistake and categorize the cause.
Today, keep an “error log” during practice. Every time you make a mistake, stop and categorize it. Was it technical (fingers in the wrong place), mental (memory lapse), musical (wrong rhythm/dynamic), or physical (tension causing buzz)? Write it down. After your practice session, review your log—you may see some patterns emerge. Maybe you consistently rush in certain places, or always forget the same lever or pedal change. Once you identify your patterns, you can work on fixes: if you always rush, practice with a metronome; if you forget lever changes, add extra visual cues. Hopefully over time your errors will shift from basic technical mistakes to higher-level musical refinements—that’s progress!
