Memory channels
Assignment: Memorize 8 bars using visual, auditory, physical, and analytical memory separately.
Harpists often memorize using muscle memory alone, but memorizing this way can be unreliable. Today, try memorizing a short section of your music using four different memory channels:
- Visual: photograph the page in your mind, remembering what the notes look like on the page..ย
- Auditory: memorize the melody and bass line, and sing them away from your harp.ย
- Kinesthetic: feel the physical motions of playing the piece. Practice the finger patterns and shapes away from the strings.
- Analytical: know the key signature, and understand the chord progression and structure of your piece.ย
When you build memory on four foundations instead of one, you create a back up planโif one channel fails in performance (your fingers freeze), the others can rescue you (you hear where youโre going next, or you see the visual shape). This is how professional performers memorize large programs, but the skill is useful for anyone who wants to learn their music more deeply.
