Beyond the basic metronome
Assignment: Practice scales with the metronome on beats 2 and 4 only, maintain a steady tempo.
Stop using your metronome as just a โbeat keeperโ and transform it into a sophisticated training tool. Try these advanced techniques: (1) Set the metronome to click only on beats 2 and 4, forcing you to feel beats 1 and 3 internally. This will help you develop a strong internal pulse. (2) Click only on the downbeat, and subdivide the remaining beats internally. (3) Practice scales or passages where you gradually increase the tempo by just 2โ4 BPM every few repetitions. (4) Practice with the metronome clicking on the off-beats or different subdivisions. Use your metronome as a practice partner that forces you out of your rhythmic comfort zone and makes you work smarter.
