Today’s tool
Bringing personality to your music
Assignment: Write down a one-paragraph story that your music tells, then play it.
Struggling to make your music meaningful? Try telling a story. Are your characters happy? Sad? Angry? Notice how your articulation and dynamics change to match each character. This exercise breaks you out of default playing mode and helps you discover the range of interpretive choices available. Now think about what character the composer actually intended (check tempo markings, style period, title) and choose your interpretation deliberately.
