I know this is an old post, but my teacher just bought a Silhouette and he let me try it out so I thought I’d throw in my 2 cents.
Firstly, let me say that for a harp that doesn’t have much of a soundboard, it has a huge sound.
A friendly warning: it will probably be hard to get a Dusty Strings Walnut FH36 in good condition for $2,000.
Memorizing on harp has always come easily to me, which I found surprising because during the 9 years I have been playing flute, the only thing I have been able to memorize are scales, and even that is difficult.
One thing I like to do that seems to help me is to listen to the piece I’m learning a lot – while I’m making breakfast or reading a book or checking my email, and then throughout the rest of the day, hum it to myself.
My teacher has a Dusty FH36S (I think) and he says he doesn’t actually
use the top 2 strings (the ones that they take off for 34-string harps)
all that much.Oh yes, time is an issue… But patterns make it very easy! You lay them on top of your fabric and pin them there, then cut the fabric around the pattern. Lots of patterns have you cut out little tabs to match together so everything gets lined up correctly.
This may or may not be helpful, but my harp teacher really likes to rip into the harp when he’s playing and this causes the bass wires to buzz against the levers (when the levers are and aren’t engaged). Eventually, he just took off his lowest C lever (and maybe the D, too, I can’t remember) and his buzzing problem went away.
