ParticipantThis is probably way off-topic, but I just realized that I’ve never seen a harpist wearing a wristwatch while playing…. is there a reason for this or just coincidence?

ParticipantWhen I went to Highland Games last summer, one of the harp performers would tell little bits of harp history between every few pieces.

ParticipantIf you go into any piano shop, they sell sets of flashcards that make it easy to read music quickly and with few mistakes.

ParticipantI don’t really know much about harps so maybe this won’t work but…. what if you loosened the strings after practice each day so there wasn’t any tension on them?

ParticipantAll the harpists I’ve talked to are just wonderful, sweet people and they’ve all told me that harp has taken them places they’ve never imagined… When I went to the Highland Games last summer, the harpist doing a demo on Friday said that she actually played her cross-strung Spanish harp for the Princess of Spain once!
For this thread, I was really hoping for some people to give me practical advice about stuff that’s happened to them that they never expected… i.e., forming calluses, things that helped them in the early days of playing, etc.

ParticipantOk, to answer a few questions….
I’m going to be 17 years old next Friday, I’ve played flute for 7 1/2 years and I took piano for almost 3 years when I was in middle school.shelby-m
ParticipantI live in rural New England and have dreamed of playing the harp for almost 5 years.

ParticipantWell, the best part about this particular fan is that you’ll always be his favorite musician!

ParticipantI’m really new to the harp scene (don’t even HAVE my harp yet) and I was just wondering what “column loading” is…
On another note, my mom has a Dodge Caliber and that might work nicely if you’re looking for a car to tote your harp in.

ParticipantMy flute teacher has mentioned more than once that she would love to have me take a few lessons with teachers other than herself… she says “Every teacher has their own bag of tricks that they’ve learned over their years of studying their instrument… you’ll develop your own bag of tricks as you go along, but as you study with different teachers, you get to make use of some of the techniques they’ve discovered.”
However, if your current teacher is trying to teach you one concept and another teacher is showing you a conflicting method, that could also be hurtful to your progression…
