Lyn, a family friend recently gave us their minivan to help me move the pedal harp and my lever harp to my school in Virginia. It only has 83,000 miles on it and mechanically it works fine. There’s some rust underneath and they were told it won’t pass inspection unless the rust is gone. They were quoted $3,000 for repairs so they were just going to scrap it! My dad actually has a sandblaster and a truck lift so we will be able to repair it for the price of the time we spend under it. 🙂
I feel a little bit bad about my lever harp, though. I saved up for 5 years for it and spent many, many hours practicing on it. Now it’s going to be a bit neglected for the first little while that I have the big harp…. I’m still going to work on Scottish music to compete in Highland Games near where I live though. 🙂
I can second the suggestion for a Dusty Strings. 🙂 I’ve had the Ravenna 34 model with complete levers for almost 3 years and I’m very much in love with it! It holds its tune pretty well (about 3 days in steady temperature/humidity) and I’ve had several professional harpists comment on how much they liked the tone. It’s a bright sounding harp and very easy to get big volume out of it. 🙂 I purchased mine new, with padded case, for $2,100 (USD). Dusty Strings makes very solid instruments and I’ve only ever heard good things about them from fellow harpists!
So, I should be looking at condenser mics? I know absolutely nothing about microphones so I checked out the options you all gave me.
A lot of you say that you just quickly answer questions while playing and soon the person goes away or comes back during your break.
Another idea is to perhaps ask a local harp repair/retail center, whose ethics you value, if they would sell your harp for you.
I’ve been playing flute for almost 12 years, alto flute for about a year, harp for almost 2 years, and I have 3 years collectively on piano (and I’ll be taking piano lessons again when I get to college this fall).
