ParticipantI’m the only harpist in town (I play lever harp), and I don’t offer to learn new songs for the brides. I like to use O’Carolan tunes for the prelude and postlude, I think there’s one called Carolan’s Dowry that is very nice. The brides always like it. I also like using “My love is like a red, red rose” during the signing of the registry.

ParticipantIf the strings are breaking at the sound board, then there probably is something wrong. I had trouble with one particular string in the 1st octave awhile back, and the guy who regulates harps around here ran some sand through the hole (I think…it was a year ago, but I think thats what he said) and it hasn’t given me problems since.
I would check the humidity level in the room you keep the harp in. I’m not sure what level the humidity needs to be (I think around 40%) but it needs to be kept at that level at all times.

ParticipantI’m glad that you posted this Valerie, as I have a new student that has just come to me, and like you taught himself – but not for months, years! And yes, he has a truck load of bad habits…and it will take him a while to unlearn them as they are so ingrained..part of his muscle memory. He is also so far ahead musically that it is quite hard for him to put the breaks on and step back to the beginning..
But! I think that despite this initial set back, technically, he has a real passion that is making him progress really rapidly…like you he has only had about 5 lessons so far and

ParticipantYes, well, I vote that John send you the Minerva with the green “embroidery” on the soundboard…Minerva’s are a darn nice model, top of the range, and very curly wurly with the carving and the

ParticipantDo the little chldrens smel funny, too?
Sorry, I know I shouldn’t have but I couldn’t resist!! 🙂 It’s all in good fun.
P.S. Jane, maybe you should check the refrigerator for the mysterious stink.

ParticipantDear Jer, I know I’m like one of those HTML eggs that never hatch but believe me, if I could buy a harp right now I would!
I’m stuck in grad school(non-music related) and would not be able to get one until I either graduate or flunk out! Then there’s student loan debt…
Until then I must remain an honorary member of harpcolumn, coveting other people’s harps…it’s slowly driving me nuts…I wish John would send me his green, stinky Salvi if he doesn’t want it! Even a bad harp will do!
From my dingy garret where I dine on limp greens,

ParticipantWow, these pictures are really making me miss my sweet dog. Her name is Rosie and she’s a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, but I had to give her up because I was always at work and she was home alone and needed more company. Aren’t pets the greatest? Sometimes they’re more perceptive than people.
Valerie, I didn’t realize you were a writer! I read some of your poems–good stuff! I’m a writer, too, but I haven’t tried to publish any fiction yet. I’m finally working on something that may have publishing potential but I’m only half-way through. Anyway, good to know that there are others here who love words as much as music! 🙂
P.S. Thanks for your post on the other thread. Because of some financial issues, I’m going to wait even longer than I originally thought to buy or rent anything, so until then it’s just my keyboard with the harp voice on. It’s appeasing me for now!

ParticipantHi Mimi,
I’m afraid that I am responsible for your new nickname, as I was typing Miso late at night and did a typing stutter and typed mi mi…And then decided that that was rather cute and decided to leave it!
No, have not been talking to myself of late…although the stress of current events did drive me somewhat nuts…I have been having long conversations with my dawg on the way to the supermarket…but not to myself incognito..yet!
Posting times seem to put you and I out of the running…yes, the email address is American.

ParticipantI believe Lyon & Healy sell small gold-coluored fingernail clippers with a harp logo on them for $2. Perhaps they offer a discount to teachers who buy in bulk? *g* It seems like a useful gift to give an amicably departing student you liked.

ParticipantWasn’t he also a little ‘overly fond of the drink’? That type of prolonged indulgence isn’t kind on ones finer reflexes.

ParticipantJohn, I think you had better go home or Jane will run off with the nice non-stinky guy from Syria that she mentioned in another post.

ParticipantHi Jerusha,
I’ll give you a hint at who I think she is….she is a petite gal….hmmmmmm..who could she be???

ParticipantI don’t think you’re obliged to do anything though a small keepsake perhaps if you’re especially fond of them.
I think they should be the ones giving you a nice present for nurturing their skills for so long and preparing them for college. My ex-ballet teacher often has students who leave to go abroad to study and they always drop by before they fly off with a big present for her.
