    Hi Elizabeth,
The piece I am playing (it’s an orchestral piece by Randolph Peters) specifically says “rustling glissandi (open hand)”. It’s written as octaves in both hands but what is confusing is that the “fingernail” sign is used to mark the direction of the glissandos. It doesn’t say to use fingernails, however. Do you just do a normal gliss? Or do you think it might mean that I should use all my fingers?? Help!!! 😀
    Thanks! Phoebe

I named my first CG pedal harp Minerva, but then my teacher informed my that Salvi had a harp named that so now I will have to change it! But what seems to be sticking instead of Minerva is Minnie. Quite unsuitable for a CG but it just seems to work!

I’m actually searching around to buy a harp and would like to know what company this is, so that I don’t buy a “wrong” harp! I have been warned by a few technicians that newer harps are not as well built as they used to be, but the problem I have is that the older CG harps (L&H are what I am looking at right now, and the harp I’m borrowing is a L&H 23, which was built around 1940) are smaller than the newer ones! So, it’s a question of saving my back or saving money on constant repairs…hmmm……any thoughts?

If people complain about how much I charge, I will explain to them how much the harp costs, and how much it costs to maintain (e.g. a set of strings costs me around $500, regulation costs around $300, etc.). Then they realize why you have to charge so much!! People can be quite ignorant towards musicians…they think that we can do things for free and that we don’t have to work that hard at all, so they don’t need to pay that much. I hate it when wedding planners say to budget a maximum of $250 for musicians (solo or ensemble). Hello! People need to eat. so if you had 5 people that would be $50 each…barely enough to cover gas.

I also hate it when people try and help me up stairs and try and grab my harp. I’ve learned to say right away, “No, thanks I don’t need any help. Please don’t touch the harp because this thing is worth $28,000…etc.”. Once they know the price they won’t dare go near you!!

    Thanks for all the info!
A friend of mine said that she was going to buy a set but it cost $1,000. But she was lucky enough to find an entire set for sale on ebay for just $55.
Do you know why Pirastro doesn’t advertise the harp strings on their website, though?

I think that the strings are mainly sheep…I could be wrong….you can phone Lyon&Healy and ask, or call Bow Brand. I really like using gut from my 3rd to 5th octave because it creates a warmer sound.

Aren’t the Chicago’s being made in China now? That’s what I’ve heard and I’ve also heard that quite a few people are not happy with their Chicago Petites because they look as if they’re only have finished and very cheaply made. I could be wrong….

I gladly gave my vote to Emanuel. I can’t read French, but from what my mother has spoken and all my cousins I could just get by to figure out where to go.

It could be a loose disc, and if it is get it regulated. Check to see if the string is buzzing against another string or anything else in the sound hole.

I started playing the Celtic Harp when I was 10, but I had already been playing the piano for 3 years, and I found that I picked up the harp extremely quickly because of that. I had one lesson at the begining and from then one was pretty much self taught until a year later, when I started taking lessons with another self taught harpist. I didn’t start proper technique until I was 12 1/2. So, I’ve only had a very solid technique for 4 years. Now, I’m working on my Gr. 10 and the OSM Standard life competition! I absolutely love to play my harp. It has become so much of my life that I couldn’t see my life without it. What a gift from God the harp is!
