I’m giving a slide lecture on the harps of Ancient Egypt at the Denver Museum of Science and Nature on Monday May 19, 2003.
I started playing harp about 3 1/2 years ago, and I’m considering majoring in harp performance in a year when I go to college. It’s not stupid for you to consider starting now. I’ve been able to learn a lot in 3 years (I had played piano for years before that). I think if you’re willing to work at it, you should be fine. I think it’s awesome that you’re interested in playing!
I’ve played at a nursing home before, and it was great! It’s probably the easiest audience anywhere! I think it’s a good way to get started, because the people there love it no matter what (who cares if you make some mistakes?). I’ve never done a wedding either, but I have played background music at parties and stuff. I like that too, because you get the experience without being in the spotlight.
Please see Rosalyn Rensch “Harps and Harpists” to begin your search. Her bibliography should be quite helpful. Remember that there has been a great deal of change in archeaological and historical methods in the past twenty years, so the more recent the information you find the more likely it is to reflect current standards.

Ms. Schweninger: I am getting married in Orange, VA (30-45 minutes north of Charlottesville) at the end of June. We are looking for a harpist. We thought we might have one, but she booked someone else before we got back to her. She was charging $365 for 2 hours. I know she is quite experienced, but I did not get to hear her play. Jennifer, I heard the sound clips on your web site. I am quite satisfied with the sound of MUMA harps. After reading your heartfelt response as well as Deborah’s response I will definitely be purchasing a MUMA 36 string! Thanks Jennifer and Deborah
