Hi Mattias.
I understand your problem, being a Norwegian myself. There are no harp retailers here, either.
My recommendation is that you save up the extra money and travel to a harp retailer elsewhere in Europe, in the UK or if you really want a Camac, then maybe France. Take it as a holiday. You really should try a harp before buying, as not all harps sound the same, even if they are the same model.
I know that’s what I will do when the time comes for me to buy my first pedal harp. I was a bit unlucky when I bought my lever harp, and really do wish I had tried before I bought it. I might have ended up with something completely different.
For now, I’m lucky that I get to rent a pedal harp soon. Maybe that would be an option? Talk to your harp teacher, and maybe she/he knows someone with a harp for rent.renate-kvalsvikParticipantThanks, Mel π I’ll check it out.
renate-kvalsvikParticipantThank you, Saul. I’ll see what I can find.
renate-kvalsvikParticipantThank you so much for the tips, everyone. I’ll see what products I can find, and try to only practice one hour at a time, then take a break.
renate-kvalsvikParticipantThe blisters are under my callouses. I vary my playing a lot, so I don’t play loudly all the time. Actually, most of the music I play vary from piano to mezzo forte to forte.
Although I do get blisters and soreness, my skin rarely cracks, and when it does, it smooths down again fast, but the skin on my fingertips where my fingers pluck the strings is really hard. Will it eventually be hard enough that I don’t get blisters?
I will try to moisturize my hands regularly when I’m not playing, especialy after washing my hands.renate-kvalsvikParticipantThanks for the advice, Karen.
I think the tension is quite high. At least when I compare it to the pedal harp I use at my lessons.
Shea butter was a good suggestion, and easy to get hold of, too. Expensive, though. But it smells good π
I will try to break up my practising, too. It’s just a bit difficult because I’m both a student and also have a part-time job + harp practise to fit into my schedule. Also, it’s hard to stop when I’ve only played for one hour or so.
Thanks again!renate-kvalsvikParticipantOh my, the Cithara sounds like an incredibly beautiful harp. Do you have a picture of it?
January 3, 2010 at 9:17 pm in reply to: What is your other job (if you have one) besides harping? #108677renate-kvalsvikParticipantI work part-time in a jewellery shop selling gold, diamonds and other beautiful trinkets of various kinds. I am also a full-time student of the Irish (Gaelic) language at the university. That is just for fun, I don’t intend to make a career out of it, it’s just a language that I’ve always wanted to learn. I also write fantasy and hope to be published one day. But playing the harp is my biggest passion π
renate-kvalsvikParticipantPet name pseudonym: Lafayette : / It’s the family dog, and he’s mostly dachshund and some border collie…
My harps’ names are RoisΓn (my small Paki harp) and Elysia (Morley Hempson 34, Celtic harp).renate-kvalsvikParticipantThanks, Carl! I’ll do that, then π
renate-kvalsvikParticipantHi Pat
I removed my blog. I just didn’t have the time for it, and decided it wasn’t what I wanted to have my life out there for everyone to see. If I ever get good enough to play professionally, I’ll make a new and less personal one.
Sorry you never got to see it.renate-kvalsvikParticipantMy new strings are all Bow Brand. I would say they do sound better than my old ones, but I don’t know what brand my old strings were. They came with the harp.
renate-kvalsvikParticipantI’ve already e-mailed him, and got a very promising answer. Bill said he would send me a CD of the Laurel being played, so I can’t wait to hear it.
I just wanted to know if anyone else had tried it.
I’m really almost completely convinced that the Laurel Leaf will be my new harp. I’m so excited! Of course, it will be about a year before I can afford it, though.renate-kvalsvikParticipantMy low G (bass wire) has the same ringing overtone that your F had before you tried to restring it… So now I don’t dare to try and do so myself, since your string went dull. Does anyone know what can be the cause of such a strange overtone? The string is brand new and has been like that since I first put it on, but all the other bass strings are fine. Maybe I should order a replacement?
renate-kvalsvikParticipantThat’s how I carry mine, too. I think this is a fine way of carrying it, though I’ve never asked anyone about it. I can’t see any other way of carrying it that would be better..?
