ParticipantA couple things.
Figuring out why some people win competitions and others don’t is helpful. The approach here is not helpful though because it is not well-thought out.
The idea that Carl seems to committ to is about etudes and preparation and maybe it’s true but

ParticipantJulie Bunzel is American trained. She didn’t win in the Israel International Competition but she did do well. Didn’t Julie Smith also place highly in the USA International Competition? She is also American trained.

ParticipantIf you choose to put something on your hands before playing, don’t use talcum powder. Talc is really bad for the human body and yes I know it’s in a lot of things that are supposed to be good like baby powder. There are a lot of studies on it. Instead buy some facial blotting paper. It will absorb sweat and oil from your hands without leaving powder on your hands or on the strings and it’s not bad for you.

ParticipantWhat is the name of the book you are reading?

ParticipantThanks for making the documentary. I made all of my students and their parents watch it because they don’t really understand what I mean when I talk about practice and they could understand by watching the show.

ParticipantI had two pedal harp teachers and one studied with only one teacher her whole life. She started harp lessons when she was 6 and stopped when she was 30.
Some of her students also started with her and have studied with her for almost that long.

ParticipantDon’t worry Barbara, we know what you meant and you could just as well have said that most of the people making the harps were men. Sometimes people just have an axe to grind.

ParticipantShe could try one long lesson each month or every two weeks with Yumiko Endo-Schlaffer. http://www.yumiharp.com
