For the piece “autami”, when it says to hit soundbox and then soundboard, would it be okay to just use the soundboard for those timpani sections? Are there harp parts that incorporate the soundbox, or is it just for the soundboard. I’ve only ever seen patting on the soundboard in harp parts but maybe I’m wrong.

Thanks so much David for your reply!! You are absolutely right about the harp part, and I can completely relate to your youtube video you posted! I’m playing the 5- piece orchestration harp part, and it feels like I’m responsible for 2 entire sections, plus holding everyone together. The counting is just crazy for everyone in some songs… I’m sweating over playing those soundboard sections. I’ve never done that ever during a show and really don’t know how I’ll get those glisses on time during those sections. I feel like if there was a recording of the 5-piece orchestration parts, that would be super helpful. If there’s any recording or youtubes you can recommend, could you let me know about them? And if you still happened to have the harp part, would you mind if I asked you about a few ridiculously hard sections that I’m trying to figure out? Thank you! Laura sweetharproses@hotmail.com

Still looking to see if anyone has any sound recordings of this show. I’ve been listening to the original broadway recording, but it hasn’t been too helpful. :-/ If anyone has any other helpful suggestions for fingerings or pdf copies of marked harp parts of this show, I would greatly appreciate it!! Thank you! Laura-sweetharproses@hotmail.com

I’m also playing “The Light in the Piazza” show in a few weeks and am a little nervous on the harp part. If anyone has any tips on what to really focus in on or fingerings for some of the sections, I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!!

I agree! I’m thinking it’s even been more than 3 years for me sadly. My 3rd and 4th octaves are completely worn where the tuning discs are and desperately need to be changed. I hate the way my top octaves are sounding too but I think it’s always been my harp. I love, love the sound of your harp!!! So beautiful! I think I was spoiled last summer listening to Camacs and Salvis all the time so now my ear longs for that sound. Need, to figure out a new harp someday! Wish it could be sooner than later, but I have to sell mine first which might take a while. I’ll keep dreaming….. 🙂

One year old wires. I get them changed every year usually with my harp regulation. I had to change them early this year and I’ve already noticed a big difference.

^^^ Hi Dear Friend!!! 🙂 🙂 Thank you for your reply! My harp has been sounding so dull lately and I figured its because I haven’t changed the gut strings in about 3 years. 😛 Bad me. 😛 ( Plus, I missed the harp regulation time slot last summer since I was in Europe so that didn’t help either) . I have heard good things about the Pirastro strings so I’m hoping I can get the funds someday so I can get those put on!

Paul: Thank you for letting me know! 🙂

Yes, I always remove one string at a time otherwise I forget which string I’m doing also! 😀 Saul, I wanted to ask you, I have always used Bow Brand but now I’m on a really tight budget since I have so many strings that need replacing that I decided to go with Vanderbilt Burgundy instead. (Should not have let the gut strings go this long, but I think Christmas really did them in last year. ) I really like the bright sound of the Bow brand so I’m a little worried about how the sound will be with the Vanderbilt since last time I tried them on my harp was years ago and they eventually settled to be too warm for my taste… I asked the lady at Vanderbilt and she said they should be pretty close in comparable in sound. Any thoughts?

I just bought a 2004 Toyota Matrix for my L&H 85 CG and I love it! But I do know that that the newer models (2008-2011) did not fit my harp. Really weird but I’m very happy with my car right now! The Saturn Vue also fit my concert grand harp really well also and it’s excellent on Gas Mileage!

I just bought a Toyota Matrix…. and I love it! But it’s an older model so I don’t know if the newer models would fit a 23. I fit my 85 CG just fine and comfortably without feeling unsafe in the car. The gas mileage is great and I like the looks of it. I’m a happy college student 🙂

Just to tag along with Jessica’s last post, I’m in the market looking for a new harp car also. I notice that the car makers have been changing so many things that used to work for harpists in the past. The newer models have less cargo room and seats not being able to fold anymore. It would have to be excellent on gas and an SUV or wagon being the smallest transport car possible( since I just got rid of my van) … Any experiences with 2007-2011 cars would be great since those are the years I’m looking at. I’ve tried the Honda Fit and Toyota Matrix which were alright for my L&H CG, but way too tight. I’m trying out the Honda CRV and Toyota Rav4 this week but any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you!

Maybe contact Sylvia Norris, I know she lives in Traverse City but she might know of someone in the U.P. I think she has a website too. http://www.norrisgroup.org/

Otherwise Northern Michigan University might know of a harpist who has connections for you. Here is their email music@nmu.edu or call 906-227-2563

    Hi Shelby,

I hear about instrumentalists in college getting instruments borrowed from the college itself. The college buy them and owns them and they have to give it back to them after they graduate. But for harpists I’ve never heard about it. I would think its a little more difficult but you can try talking to someone in the music department about it. At whichever music school you go to, you should be able to have a concert grand to work with. My school didn’t have one at first so they had to buy one for the harp department. They should also give you a key to the harp room so you can practice on it whenever you want to.
