I broke a blood vessel in my upper arm one Summer… it didn’t really hurt but WOW was it a amazing bruise! It lasted for weeks, and was every color you can imagine.

You really seem to get the craziest clients! Of course, then you have the best stories 🙂 Maybe you should write a book!

    Dear Madeline,

There are lots of amazing teachers here in the D.C. area, and I have heard from many friends who go to Christendom that there are lots of harpists there, too 🙂

My teacher, Elizabeth Blakeslee, is amazing. It would take you a little over an hour of driving up 66 towards DC to get to her, but that’s with no traffic, and 66 east in the morning is CRAZY. So if you’re planning on getting close to DC for lessons, you’ll have to take that into account. I’m not sure who’s closer to Front Royal, but I’m sure there’s someone!

Anyway, good luck! If you end up at Christendom, come up to St. John the Beloved in McLean sometime for the TLM at noon on Sundays; it’s beautiful!

    Dear Mr. Rogerson,

I don’t know much about theory books, but I can tell you what lever to move for what keys:

Eb Major/c minor – all levers down
    Bb/g – raise ‘a’ levers
    F/d – raise a + e levers
    C/a – raise a, e, and b levers
    G/e – raise a, e, b, and f levers
    D/b – raise a, e, b, f, and c levers
    A/f# – raise a, e, b, f, c, and g levers
    E/c# – raise all levers

(This is for a harp tuned in Eb.)

I hope this is helpful to you!

I was planning on going, and then I realized I have a concert Friday night, and I’m not available Sunday 🙁 The faculty looks wonderful! I was particularly looking forward to Kim Robertson and Rhett Barnwell. Any chance any of them will be back next year, or does the faculty generally change every year?

    Victoria,

I am so sorry this happened to you. When I was a college student, just beginning harp, I once sat in a rehearsal where there were two harp parts, and because I couldn’t sight read Harp 1 (the other harpist, a professional, wasn’t there for that rehearsal) the conductor (not our regular conductor,) openly mocked me in front of the whole orchestra. I was only there because there were no other harpists in the department, so I played (or sat behind the harp!) for everything… it was *terrible* Like Gretchen, I feel your agony 🙂 Feel better, it’s NOT AT ALL your fault 🙂

Wow, Angela, well said! An excellent description of the situation. I second Kreig Kitts, and if you’re ever in the Diocese of Arlington (Virginia, that is) let me know and I’ll point you to some parishes where they have a full ‘Missa Cantata’ every week. There is some really beautiful music being done here, by several different churches/ denominations. We had a Requiem Mass for All Saints Day with the Duruflé Requiem (just the organ version, sadly, no harp!)

Wow! Maybe it is out of print and that’s why no one lists it? Maybe everyone else thought it was weird too (although, I like Reed’s music, to play. On flute, that is!)

I looked at the Hal Leonard website (the current publisher,) and there is no harp listed in the instrumentation of Reed’s arrangement, so maybe no? I’ve played a lot of Reed in my time as a flutist, and there was never a harp part that I can recall in any of his pieces (but then again, we didn’t have someone to play for us, so maybe it was just left out.)

I agree with Kathy, Eliza, I think your comments are extremely gracious. I’ve been following this thread for a while, and I think I’ll let your response be the last word on the subject for me… I wish I could always be so charitable in my assessments of people/situations!

I might win for ‘most ironic.’ I started on the flute, it was my primary instrument in college, and I still regularly preform on it, but I have been moving more and more towards harp in the past several years. A few months ago I was taking my Prelude 38 out of my car at a church where I play regularly and they know me only as a harpist, and a someone stopped and said, ‘Don’t you wish you played the flute! Hahahaha!’ I didn’t explain 🙂

I don’t have much to contribute to the discussion, but I just wanted to tell you, Sherri, that I LOVE your arrangements on Soundcloud. OH, my goodness, they are beautiful!
