What an interesting thread! I can appreciate this discussion from many different perspectives.
On the one hand, there is nothing illegal or illegitimate about Sherry’s fundraising campaign. She is being totally honest about what she wants and how she will use the funds; I wish the same could be said of all mainstream charities. Anyone who is offended by the campaign need not donate to it. And there may be some individuals of means out there who will feel moved to make a contribution.
On the other hand, I also sympathize with those who find the request audacious. Many of us saved money for years — decades, even — to purchase a pedal harp. I’m sure most of us fantasize about harps that we will never own because they are well beyond our means. When a plea for money goes out to the general public, it is usually for something which will be of clear benefit to the broader community, not simply a request for help buying an expensive item which someone happens to long for. (And I do understand that longing–I think we all do).
Sherry, if the checks are not pouring in, please don’t interpret that as a sign that no one cares about you or your dream. Rather, as has been pointed out, we are all working hard to provide for ourselves and our families; beyond that, we are putting our charitable dollars where they will alleviate the most suffering in the world and do the most good. I hope that you are able to realize your dream someday, but please remember that you do not need to own a harp to play the harp, and to have the joy and transformative, healing power of music in your life.
