The college lesson that still sticks with me

We asked college grads to tell us what collegiate advice stuck with them long after school was over. Here’s what they remembered:

“Felice Pomeranz was my teacher at Berklee, and she taught me to be unapologetically myself as a harpist. She taught me technique, jazz, and even practical things like: don’t write in pedal changes when you’re playing jazzโ€”learn to understand the harmony! But the lesson that stayed with me most came from watching how she moved through the world: be bold, think outside the box, meet people, create opportunities, understand the business, and don’t feel like there is only one ‘correct’ way to have a career as a harpist. She showed me that musicianship is bigger than playing the notes well; it’s knowing who you are and being willing to put that person into the world.”

โ€”Jessica Brizuela, Los Angeles, Calif.

“If the conductor tells you to play quieter, take it as a compliment. And always use 2B pencils!”

โ€”Ciorstaidh Beaton, Glasgow, Scotland

Thinking in chords! Especially with arpeggiosโ€”that was super helpful. Now I am a harpist who easily plays lead sheets or improvises, because my hands do the chord thing automatically.”

โ€”Lena Rummel, Lindau, Germany

“The one thing I learned from college professors that truly stuck with me was that you will continue to come up against the same type of personality until you figure out how to handle it. It was in reference to another teacher who was making things difficult at the time. I’ve thought about that lesson so often as I’ve navigated my life as a professional harpist.”

โ€”Maria Phippen, Salt Lake City, Utah

“More than anything, I remember I was taught to take care of myself holistically. Mental, physical, emotionalโ€”each of these elements works like a cog in a machine (your body), and if one is missing or not maintained, it will greatly affect your playing and relationship to the harp.”

โ€”Honoka C. Shoji, Montreal, Canada

“My teacher at the Manhattan School of Music, Mariko Anraku, always said ‘in music and in life’ and it still sticks with me every day, in harp playing and in daily [life]. She means to relax and to channel the right energy in everything that we do.”

โ€”Karen Elizabeth Tay, Singapore and New York City

“One thing that’s stayed with me from Miss McDonald is to use 1×1-inch Post-It notes on students’ music with the date and teaching point. I still have the original ones with her handwriting in many of my scores!”

โ€”Kirsten Agresta Copely, New York City

“The best advice I received was from June Han at Yale who said, ‘Don’t worry about your career: focus on your reputation.’ It was life-changing for me to hear that!”

โ€”Hรฉloรฏse Carlean Jones, Frankfurt am Main, Germany
