I just bought a 19 string Pixie harp on an auction, and am learning to play. I’m 38, live in NY and am enjoying it very much. I’m already looking into getting a bigger harp. Right now I’m practicing out of of Sylvia Woods’ books and video.
I recently went on a similar quest for a new harp, needing to choose between a Venus harp and a Lyon & Healy harp.
In the last teachers forum from AHS, it had a list of harp parts for school orchestras, also “Nordic” by Howard Hanson (2nd Movement, Symphony 1) is a good part. Hope you find one!

I don’t have much advice to give you . . . the person who replied before me answered you pretty well. I just wanted to let you know that I had a lot of the same problems when I started out playing – none of the local music stores carried any harp stuff, no one knew any teachers and no one knew where I could find a harp! It was fairly embarassing: “Hi, I was just wondering if you sold harps?” “*laughs* NO.”
Well, I study the harp at my city’s university conservatory. Since the harp practice rooms are on the 4th floor, it sometimes gets a little toasty and some of the harpists like to crack a window open.
We’ve had a problem in the past with pigeons flying in the windows, apping around the rooms, perching on the harps . . . well, one day, I was sitting down for a lesson with my teacher, and she stood up to tune one of the lower notes. Lo and behold – a pigeon had left a lovely *ahem* present on the tuning pin.

I am just learning to play the harp. My husband had a lap harp made for me and I got it in Oct.. I am really enjoying it. I am 45 y/o and live along the Gulf Coast of Mexico, in Florida. I have always loved listening to harp music but never had any idea that I would be able to play one. We went to a folk festive last year in May. That is were I was able to hold a harp and have someone show me how to try and play it. There were harpist from all over the country and one from Ireland. They even had people who made harps, showing how they are made and you could listen to them being played. I was very surprised when I found out about my harp and could hardly wait for it. As, I stated I have only been playing for nine months. I would like to hear from others that have harps. I should tell you something about myself. I am married with one child, a boy who is 27 y/o. We share our home with 4 cats, 1 small dog and my mother. I work in the medical field. My hobbies are stiching, mountain biking, camping, hiking, and boating. Hope to hear from you.

What about the harps from Webster’s String Instruments? I’m by no means an expert in these matters, but it would seem that they have a decent selection of 40 string pedal harps in the $3,000-$5,000 range!

I’ve played a little from medaeval to modern; my favorite piece is the three traditional welsh airs, although the arrangement of “The Ash Grove” is kind of strange.
I love Handel’s Passacaille myself, but anything by Salzedo is great. I recently played the second movement from his Concert Variation on Adeste Fideles at a recital.
About seven years ago, I took my small wire harp to my grandmother’s house to play for her as she lay dying from cancer.
