Also, the song I’m trying to play has a pretty easy chord progression: G, Em, D, C. I’ve figured this out on harp in the key of C (which is how I was playing it) but as far as trying to figure out the melody, I have no idea how to figure it out from the original key its played in, and play it in the key of C. And thats why I posted this. I figured it might be easier to cover it if I play it in the same key. Unless anyone has a suggestion of how I can figure the melody in a different key, but I’m trying to figure it out by ear so..
What a cool story! 🙂 Funny how shes just like some of the rest of us, can’t even take a vacation w/ out having a harp within arms reach.
Thats awesome! She seems like a very sweet and genuine person. Was she renting it for a performance or just to play while on vacation? (I hate not being able to play, when I’m away from my harp lol) Also, what style of harp did you rent to her?
Ah sorry, I didn’t think I’d seen it on there before but perhaps I have. Either way, I just took a look. I’m never really sure how I feel about bronze on harps but this one actually does look really nice 🙂 Is it your dream harp?
Ahh wow I’m really excited about the response that this thread is receiving. You guys have some motivational stories! I’ve started a harp fund (basically just turned my savings into the harp fund) and plan on asking my parents to ask family if they wouldn’t mind just contributing to the fund in lieu of presents for birthdays and holidays probably for the next few years 🙂 I’m hoping to save up a nice sum for the deposit so I could hopefully have lower payments. I wanted to try and avoid having a car and harp payment at the same time but I know that will be nearly impossible (unless I wait awhile after I get my harp, to trade in my car).
I work full time during the week now but I’m thinking of starting to dedicate weekends to a part time job. Ideally I’d like to just be able to throw extra money (from weekend work) at my car payments so I could get that paid off sooner AND THEN start saving more for the harp. Of course not having a car payment would allow me to put away more money for that 😛 Would be so much easier, I’m sure, if I was better at harp and could play gigs/weddings on the side! But perhaps some day 🙂
Also Sid- would you mind posting a picture of your 23? I don’t think I’ve seen an ebony/bronze one and I wanted to get a better look than the pic you posted in your music stand.
Hey everyone, thanks for replying! I totally forgot about Atlanta Harp Centers sale. I went to their site and unfortunately, it only applies to octave and skeletal sets, rather than individual strings BUT….I did find that their pricing is the same as Vanderbilt but their shipping is cheaper 😀
Kind of bummed I could’ve saved 3 bucks had I posted this BEFORE ordering my replacement string lol but I figure its not worth the hassle of canceling the order to get a refund and then placing a new order through Atlanta but…I’ll know for next time 😀

Thanks so much for your reply. It will probably come handy once I start recording and I’ll definitely take your advice. As far as your pick up, I looked through the link you gave me and don’t think you specified what kind of pick up it is or anything. But regardless, I’m curious as to what you might be able to recommend me? Right now, I’m renting a harp and probably will be for awhile, until I can buy my own pedal harp. That said, I’m not/can’t do any sort of alteration or adding a permanent pick up to it. Do you have any recommendation for some sort of “contact” pick up(s) I could look into purchasing? I’m not 100% sure how they work, but do you know what I could look into just placing on my soundboard and plugging into an amp (they plug directly into amps, correct? I tried googling harp pick ups but I wasn’t really sure what to look for :/
Also, for reference: I’m recording on a L&H 38 string Prelude and I have a Blue Mic Snowball USB mic to record with.
I kinda scanned over this thread a bit and I’m wondering if anyone records w/ pickups into an amp and then into a mic? I’m wondering if its a worthwhile investment to get a pickup for my soundboard.
I’m not sure what kind of differences there are though between recording from an amp vs recording acoustically. One of my biggest peeves is that whenever I record, you can always hear the replacement buzz on the strings nicely. Would the pickup still pick up on this if i used that rather than placing my mic by my harp? Also, I just realized, most of the times I place the mic really low but in the front of the harp. I always kind of figured if I placed it near the sound hole, it might not pick up well in the highs and lows but never experimented much with it, so perhaps that might be way you can hear the buzz?
I’m going to be recording f/ an EP. Anyone have advice? Also, if I were to eventually play small gigs, would it be best to have an amp or could I wait to invest in one? Thanks in advance for any advice 😀
Thank you Lyn! I definitely did think about the what if’s as you mentioned, what if it’s hot or I’m playing in a warm room but I guess I could just handle that battle when I come to it (and I would probably end up just dealing with it ha).
I primarily want to write my own music and perform but I would really love to do weddings as a sort of side job, for the experience to get used to playing in front of people and of course for the pay. I just know it wouldn’t be something long term for me, I’m sure, as I would like to focus more on my own music. If my goal with harp would be to play weddings or in ensembles or an orchestra for the rest of my life, then yes, I guess I would consider my body modifications more carefully and take more consideration in the type of career path I’m taking. But like I said, if I’m playing a show and playing my own music, I would hope people would want to come and see me to hear my music, not to critique what is on my body lol.
Anyway, I think its funny you mentioned tattoos and body modifications becoming something you see everywhere. When people try to bring up the whole “well what are you going to look like when you’re old and saggy and wrinkley!?!?!!?!?” I like to think I’d look like EVERYONE else that has the same tattoos now that they’ll have in 40 or 50 years hah. Perhaps it will become more of the norm to have them, than not? Just thoughts 🙂
Well, lets say (hypothetically- of course) that I have half of a sleeve on my arm, from my elbow to my shoulder. Regardless of whether or not its “tasteful” (as this is subjective and can mean something completely different to anyone who has an opinion on it), I would probably feel more comfortable just wearing long sleeves or a light sweater or something that would cover it up if I were meeting people that would potentially hire me. Given that I would make a point to cover it at a wedding (again by wearing a light sweater etc…) do you think it would be important to tell them, out of respect so they know beforehand (just like a..’hey I can cover this up if its a big deal’), or do you think it wouldn’t matter as long as I had planned to wear something over it?
I wouldn’t think it would matter (what they don’t know can’t hurt them, right?) but I was just curious to every one else’s opinions. Is it unprofessional to even mention it if I was pretty certain I would/could cover up?
I feel like this is a dumb question or that maybe most of the people on here don’t care for or don’t have tattoos so maybe this doesn’t seem as important to anyone else, but it is to me.
