    Hi Bill!

I placed my microphone about 1-2 feet away from the bottom of my harp. Unfortunately I can’t take pictures right now because my recorder is in storage but it’s a really simple set up. I want you to keep in mind that I recorded on a Prelude 40 lever harp so I also didn’t have pedals to deal with. I think I had tested putting the recorder on the back, near my feet and sound holes and also at the front. However, I believe on all of my final takes, the mic was in front of the harp about a foot or so away, on the floor.

I imagine if you’re playing on a pedal harp, you would probably want to put the mic/recording device at the front of your harp so you’re hearing less of your feet/pedal changes. Another idea is to mic up your harp with a transducer or pick up (I’ve had people recommend Fishman brand pickups that are used on pianos but also work well for harps) and you can plug it into an amp and record from an amp. Some modern amps have ways to record directly from the amp. HOWEVER, I actually connected my keyboard to my amp to record piano parts in one of my songs. I ended up playing it through the amp and I had my recording device about 2 feet in front of my amp recording it and that worked out well! So theres another option.

Depending on your setup at home, the kind harp you have, the acoustics of your room/house etc… you may just have to mess around with a recording device and see which placement results in the best quality of sound for what you’re trying to record. Hopefully my advice helps though! Let me know if you have any other questions!

Teifi Harps- I’ve used my recordings for music that I’ve self-recorded and released. I’ve recorded my harp playing, keyboard and also field/outside sounds and used it in music. If you’re interested, my website is WretchedWren.bandcamp.com

    Thanks!!

    Hi there!!

I did a lot of research before purchasing a recording device and I can give some input on what I bought.

I ended up buying a Zoom H4N. From my research, this is like a “tried and true” field recorder. I thought about getting a newer model Zoom, one that looked nicer and more compact etc.. but the H4N seemed to have overall better reviews and of course, it’s an older/ more “established” model so I trusted the reviews more.

It works well for recording things outside (bird sounds, wind/trees, traffic etc…) as well as inside, recording my harp. I self-recorded and self-released an EP in 2015 and got great feedback on my recording quality from some harpists. I’ll link my website at the bottom if you want to listen to hear the quality of it. Its an XY microphone which (I think) means that it has two microphones on top to do the recording. I know that there are various settings that you can set them to if you want to get fancy with the recording but I just use something basic to record my music.

Lastly, the H4N is easy to use and there are a lot of youtube videos on it if you can’t figure it out. It’s a product thats been out there for awhile and I can tell you, it’s worth the money for what I use it for. I’m sure that there are a lot more features that you can use with it but if you just need it for personal use, it would be fine. (though, I’m sure if you need it for professional use as well, depending on what you need, it could be handy for that too!)

It’s a little bit bulkier than some of the newer models that you can find but like I said, it had great reviews and I got the recommendation from other musicians so I went with it.

If you’re interested in hearing the recording quality, my music is at wretchedwren.bandcamp.com

I did minor editing to my songs (like adding reverb effects etc..) but you can still tell how good the quality is.

    Hope this helps!! Good luck!

Okay so FYI in case anyone is in the Chicago area and didn’t know, L&H does deliver. I’m 8 miles west of the city and they charge $50. I’ll probably end up doing that.
Thanks for contributing to this thread 😀

I can’t believe I didn’t even think of that sooner lol

I’ll definitely ask them, thanks so much!

Adding on to this, has anyone tried a crosstrek? I’d like to get a subaru this year…I’ve always had my heart set on a forrester but I noticed that the crosstrek is a little cheaper. I have a L&H prelude which I’m sure would fit, no problem. Eventually I would like to get a concertino or some sort of smaller pedal harp. And I don’t want to have to trade up my car for that. Does anyone have opinions of a crosstrek? I haven’t seen anything on this forum..

    Hi everyone,

I’m getting closer to actually financing my own harp and I figured I would ask a few more questions on here. I think theres probably only so much that L&H can tell me when it comes to getting financed.

Anyway, I’ve never financed anything myself before so I don’t know a lot about the whole process and how it works (so forgive me if some of these questions are dumb or seemingly obvious)

Does the amount that you’re financing determine the loan term they would be willing to approve you for? I’m wanting to finance a lever harp but I wanted to go for a little bit longer of a loan term (despite the interest rates) in order to have a lower payment now. Someone else on here said that there isn’t a penalty for paying off early, which I plan on doing, but the only way I can make this happen right now is if I have a lower payment w/ the option to pay more later/pay off early. I would imagine they would be willing to do this, considering they’d be charging a higher interest rate…I don’t know, I figured I would ask though.

Also, does anyone have experience applying w/ a cosigner? I’m not sure if there is anything additional I need to know (like any additional fee for applying w/ cosigner etc…) because I plan on doing this.

I guess the last question I can think of now is how long the whole process takes? Do you get approved/denied within the same day or is it something I’ll have to wait a week or two to find out?

Thanks for any/all of the advice!!

in reply to: Looking for a new harpmobile! #78219

Wow, I hope your harp wasn’t in the van with you when you were hit 🙁

Anyway, I didn’t read the whole thread but I skimmed and didn’t see it mentioned…

I’ve always heard Subarus are great cars. They last FOREVER (I know a handful of people that still drive theirs from the early 90s, and run well) and get really good mileage for being a wagon or SUV (depending on the model, but most get good mileage, it seems). Anyway, just mentioning it because I think I’m looking to trade in my car this summer and I’ve had my heart set on a Subaru Forester for a long time. And I’ve known a few people to say that they’re great harpmobiles.
However, I would still recommend taking your harp with you when you go car shopping 🙂

    Good luck!

    Sam you’re amazing!!!
Thanks so much! I think I understand exactly what you’re saying but I’ll have to try and apply that in a piece that I write and hopefully it’ll make sense.

Thanks so much again, both of you!!

in reply to: switching keys (kind of cheating here…) #60566

You both are wonderful, thank you so much!
Sam, I may definitely be emailing you if I have other questions, thanks for reaching out 🙂
Tayce, I will try your suggestion as well cause thats definitely something new for me 🙂 Thank you!!

sorry, I suppose I should mention I play on a lever harp (in case it weren’t obvious :P)

in reply to: Rechargeable Amp? #78061

Just curious, how well do you like that contact mic and where do you place it to get the best quality? I wanted to get a contact mic, I’m still looking into it.

    Good luck selling it!!

Also, I would like to note that NO, I’m not using my pinky for ANYTHING when I play…which is why I’m confused as to why I may be having an issue with it recently lol
