I started playing harp 3 years ago, and I live in the Montreal area. I rented a harp from Mrs. Sim at the Classical harp academay in Ottawa until I bought one.(from her as well) She is really helpful in getting you started with a harp. Please call her or email her. Tell Her Edella Says Hi! There is no place in Montreal that I know of where you get a harp to rent. But again, Call Mrs. Sim. She will give you the best deal she can. Just wanted to weigh in…
I own a flatsicle, and a salvi juno, and a lyon and healy prelude. All 3 of course have different sounds. But I’ve found that i love them all. the Flatsicle has its own place in my heart. It is a sweet little harp, it’s very lightweight, and by using the knee stick and the strap together, balance isn’t an issue. At one time I thought it was sounding twangy, but then my husband noticed that a string or 2 had slipped on the lever. probably happened when I de tuned it for transport. once it was corrected, it sounded great. However, the string tension is really light, and you do need to adjust your playing/technique for this. Once you master this, it has a pleasant sound. Of course it doesn’t project like the bigger harps, but it has it’s place in the harp world. I think once you understand you need to play it differently, you can appreciate it. This harp has a time and place for itself.
Hi, I own a black Flatsicle ( I think all things look higher end in black!). I really find that this gives enough range for a lap harp. I also have a Salvi Juno, which is also a travel harp, and it is fully levered, but I really have yet to need anything other than the C.F, and B levers. I have alot of the sylvia woods books, and have found that the “easy “versions can be played on the harpsicle. sometimes you might have to play a “G” an octave up, or an “A” but you don’t really need to move the whole piece up. Her “Beauty and the Beast” sound beautiful on the small harp. Also, Cindy Blevins has a lap harp compedium book that is written for the small harp, and it is easy to play for beginners, and is comprised of what my friends call “spa music”. My Advice is save your money, and buy the Flatsicle, not the Fullsicle. Or go big, and get a fully levered 34 string harp.

Try Cindy Blevins music. My Friends call it “Spa Music” when I play it. She has a number of books available, and several ones available by PDF, so you can get them right away.
I wouldn’t buy anything less than 34 strings. I’ve only been playing for a little less than 3 years, and I would say that within the first year, I was needing that low C. you can find lots of music written for less strings, but with 34 strings, you never need to concern yourself with it. don’t limit yourself now, it will surprise you how fast you can progress if you really want to learn, and practice
yes, she is the closest to me, and I’ve actually bought from her, as there is no dealer in my city. – probably because it sounds like a big investment , in a small market. I’m going to look into it though.
