MemberBy contacting first Camac Harps in France, and then other large harp makers, (Horngacher, David, Pilgrim, etc.) you ,may find one that has sold a harp in or near the area in India where you will play, and let you make contact for a one-day rental possibility from the owner. If this does not yield a result, see if a single-action lever harp made by Mr. Arsalaan Fay in Florida USA might suit your needs for wedding repertoire. It is 33 strings , has 4 detachable legs, and 7 levers each of which change by a semitone all strings of the same name, just like the Tyrolean single-action pedal harps in Europe. Mr. Fay is at dharps@juno.com. An investment in such a greatly portable yet harmonically superior (to ordinary lever harps) instrument may be to your great advantage over the years, as I have found with mine., leading to more performing opportunities than before ownership.

MemberIn my large city where there are many qualified harp players. through the American Federation of Musician, members can see a list of trusted agents, to whom we can send our promotional materials.. This eliminates risk of working with an unknown agent.

MemberArmande, A few years ago, Danielle Perrett, prominent UK harpist, toured with a singer. They both wore costumes in the period of Jane Austen novels, and the music suited that era. Visit Danielle’s website at http://www.danielleperrett.co.uk and if you can make contact with her from there perhaps ideas of suitable repertoire for your event would be found. Good luck!

MemberNiina,
Is Marisa Robles still teaching there in London? I have her LP recording Harp Music of Spain on which she recorded seven of Guridi’s compositions including Viejo Zortzico (My favorite is Zorabitatua Naiz) and on the back of this 1966 vinyl recording, she wrote: ” Jesus Guridi was one of my very best friends. He was born in Vitoria in the Basque country and lived for many years in the north of Spain, but was for some time Principal of the Madrid Conservatoire. He was specially interested in the study of Basque music. The Zortzico is a very popular native Basque dance, and in this way one could perhaps describe it as the Basque equivalent of the Scottish reel though the actual form of the dance is quite different. Guridi also wrote 22 songs based on Basque folk melodies which he arranged also for orchestra and also for piano. The six I liked best he made into harp pieces for me and are presented on this disc.” If you could make contact with Marisa Robles I believe even more information might be available to you. Best wishes!patricia-jaeger
MemberIf you go to http://www.harpkit.com you will be at the online site of Musicmakers, in Stillwater, Minnesota, USA,that sells several sizes of harps either finished, or as kits. They sell their instruments worldwide. A friend ordered a kit and had a guitar maker put it together for him. He enjoyed the harp but had chosen the least expensive of the 3 or 4 brands of sharping levers offered by the company. These soon had several malfunctions; the company sent others at no charge. I would recommend you choose a more costly set of levers if you order any kit. If you have good cabinetmaking skills, put the harp together yourself at great saving of costs. If you are more of a player, then either let the company make it for you, or have a competent wooden instrument maker do it for you. The above company has a free catalog, and a very good reputation. Contact: info@harpkit.com.

MemberHenriette Renie wrote a trio for Harp (or Piano), violin, and cello. I have the edition published by Rouhier in Paris but notice it is not in the major catalogues for harp music, probably because it is now in public domain! If you go to inslp.org and type in: Renie, Henriette, about 5 items from the top is the Trio. Looking through my copy I see that it is in four movements: Allegro Risoluto, Scherzo, Andante, and Final. Probably the Andante movement would stand alone quite well, but the whole work is at advanced level for all three players. My copy, that I regrettably have never played, was given to me by Albertina Flack Weygandt who studied with Tournier in France and Grazielle Pampari in Illinois. Mrs. Weygandt was formerly harpist with Chicago Lyric Opera before moving to Seattle, Washington.

MemberAs the heavy floor harp may slip since we lean it against us while playing, a small mat gives security when there is very smooth flooring, It’s wise for harpists who free-lance to ask whether the area they will play is carpeted or not. Possibly the tone is a bit more resonant when the harp is on bare wood, however. One prominent harpist plays on a portable wooden podium on stage, and that hollow device may give a degree of amplification.

MemberIf you wish an accompaniment part (with solo parts included for voice of any range, or choir (no text but this is widely available elsewhere), violin or flute, viola, and cello (or trombone or other bass clef instrument etc.) look for the Herald Music arrangement at most dealers in harp music. Lower intermediate level. Lever harp adjustments: one measure has G# so use another note instead; also substitute an F too low for your range, with a different note of like harmony. Key of D. Harp accompaniment only rarely uses the traditional note figure mentioned by Jessica R. because instead the two hands, freed from the solo line, use more upward arpeggio patterns, and even triumphant chords, in the final section.

MemberSophie, go to http://www.harpandvibes.com. There you will find that Beverly Colgan, Harp, and Joe Venuti, Vibraphone, have been playing together and producing recordings since 1980. You will get ideas for repertoire from that site.

MemberJerusha, If you need one rather quickly, consider using a blanket and keeping it on the instrument using “Blanket Pins” that I remember from past camping days. Otherwise visit a good fabric store and go to the area where sturdy fabrics are, after measuring your Dusty and buying a bit more than twice its height. As Your harp will be protected by this temporary move, and later you may decide to make your own case..As my dear Irish grandmother used to say, “Needs must when the devil drives!”

MemberSari, at age 7 I broke my right forearm and soon fully recovered. Ether was given in those days, as anaesthetic! Hope you not only recover fully but also increase calcium intake.

MemberTwo collections published by Herald Music and carried by many harp music dealers might be useful. Folk Harp With a Friend, and Familiar Hymns With a Friend (the latter including a CD) have parts for harp and string quartet but are quite effective with just harp, violin, and cello. If the violinist is competent, he/she could use double-stops, combining Violin 1 and Violin 2, for richer effect.

MemberI should have mentioned, the trifocals I described above are not contacts, just regular glasses.
