Regarding the ring finger, also remember the ring finer and pinky are somewhat joined (as anybody who’s tried moving the pinky by itself knows), and the pinky should move with it. I was just reading a news story about how important the pinky is to overall hand strength (I was going to link it sometime when I got around to it).

Yolanda Kondonassis’ book “On Playing the Harp” has some exercises at the beginning that did quite a bit to improve my ring finger sound. I was also taking from a teacher at the time who emphasized an even sound across the fingers, but if that’s not possible for you, I’d highly recommend this book and its beginner’s exercises and warm-up.

I’m reminded of friends who do the two-finger peck while typing. They always have to look at the keyboard. My mother made me learn the other way, and now I can fly without looking. It’ll pay off!

The “sofa cushion” remark is pretty funny. I can see the mistake.

I’m going to throw out another “have you tried ….?” based on a mystery click I had recently with my lever harp.

I had a clicking noise at the top of my harp recently when I’d move one of the levers. A string I had recently changed wasn’t quite lined up on the bridge pin, and when the lever would engaged it would slip out of the groove, making a little clicking noise that sounded more like a mechanical noise than what

Katie, by “Time To Say Goodbye” do you mean the Sarah Brightman song? If so, it’s also an Andrea Bocelli song and the Italian title/refrain is “I Will Go With You.” Much more wedding-appropriate.

Janet, alas that’s the way many of us were taught. We were taught that it is rude to go through a doorway before a lady, even if it might be easier to hold the door open from the other side. So now when holding doors from the “wrong” side, we lean through it rather than go through and hold it from the other side.

The most recent movie version of Pride and Prejudice does show a harp in the room where Georgiana plays the piano, though it doesn’t show her play the harp.

I’ve never been to a show of that sort. I wouldn’t let a dog I didn’t know too close to my harp, let alone a pony.

Remember that you can continue to love and enjoy something while not making your career out of it. Hopefully you’ll like your career, but you’re allowed to love many things in life.

And like others said, your career isn’t always determined by what you study.

I’m not familiar with most of these names, but I don’t agree with the classification of Park Stickney

I’ve always found it curious that the piece got the title “Asturias” when the sound is so evocative of southern Spain.

I wasn’t aware what region Zabaleta was from. Perhaps explains some of his interpretation. Also, I understand that while it is a standard piece for guitar, it was originally written for piano. Perhaps Zabaleta was trying to imitate how it would sound on the

I personally wouldn’t do a photo with a Beatles t-shirt on. It makes it look more like the work of a fan and less of a professional. I also think it establishes the site too much as a “Beatles music on the harp” site, rather than as a harpist site.

I listened to the recording of Asturias, and I think you really got the feel of that piece and translated it quite well into the harp’s sound. I prefer your interpretation to a recording I have of a very well-known harpist playing it, who I think missed the mark on it.

I was recently reminded of Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet, which prompted me to mention the nickname I have for Juliet’s second aria: “Shut Up and Drink It Already.”
