Have you seen Erin Hill’s stuff? I don’t think it could be classified as rock (maybe poppy rock mixed with a bit of jazzy bluesy stuff???) but it is very neat. She does original sci-fi songs. Stun and Silver Feet are my particular favorites.She does not have those up on youtube, only on her myspace account but here is one from youtube. I have to say if you like funky xmas music you MUST listen to Silver Feet. Nothing like reindeer in kevlar suits.

Thank you for the info. I stink at arranging but I guess i’ll give it a shot. Do you happen to know of any other songs written in this style? I researched the song a bit and found that it is in what is called the villancico style. I love the sound of the song with the main theme and distinctive chorus. The source I found did not mention other songs in this style though!

Learning music is just like learning a language. The earlier you start the better, but it does not actually have to be with an instrument in the beginning stages. Very young children (2 and younger for example) are able to learn music, although the harp is difficult for very young children in terms of manual dexterity. Studies have shown that learning a musical instrument from a young age can improve overall memory, improve scores on standardized and iq tests and they also show improved listening skills. Their shorter attention spans demand a teacher with a great deal of patience and very short frequent lessons. If your child is interested in the harp and the teacher is willing, I would go for it!
Hmm, I guess we’ll have to wait and see then. The plastic-logic display is supposed to be a full 8 by 11 very thin portable, touch sensitive display (similar to the iphone) so I would imagine it would work well for music. The apple tablet is also supposed to be thin, 10 inches and touch sensitive and both are going to be much cheaper than the current electronic sheet music options. I’ll put the links for both for anyone else who is curious about how these would work for this purpose:

Well maybe the new plastic logic device or the new apple tablet will be better at it. I do know that you can read just about anything on the kindle though you just have to download and convert to do so.I wonder if you could use the large Kindle for this, or perhaps the upcoming e-reader by Plastic-Logic? Has anyone played around with any of the larger readers to see if they can be used for sheet music?
HelenAfter watching the video of the heartland carbon fiber harp it is easy to hear the difference in tone, but I actually like it (i’ll take one of each please!) To me the carbon fiber harp has beautiful clear bell like tones in the upper register and lovely tones in the mid range but it seems to lack depth in the lower register. Does anyone know if there are plans at any of the pedal harp companies to experiment with carbon fiber?

I really like the piece, the pedaling is moderatly difficult but it is was worth learning for the “That’s Harry Potter!” I got from some of the neighobor kids who came over when I was practicing it (I was impressed they recognized it at the time since it in no way sounded like it should have at that point).
