Thanks for the kind words Lyn. Don’t be too impressed just yet as I’ve yet to play anything on it other than tuning intervals and scales. This one took a long time for me to finish and was very nerve wracking. There’s not much in the way plans and most other professional builders keep their secrets close to their breast. To inspire me I named him Horme ( from Greek meaning spirit of impulse or effort) Phantasos( from Greek meaning Spirit of dream and fantasy that takes the shape of inanimate objects) As silly as giving it a name was I think it gave me the push to finish him and get him out of my shop. Maybe it will also be helpful in me learning to play it.

    Hi Sherri,
Being that this was my first cross strung I wanted to play it safe. I had Vermont Strings create an all nylon and nylon wrap set for me.

Here is my new harp! It’s a Pleyel style 62 string cross strung made by me. Now I need to get comfortable playing it.

David, She was just upset because the best thing she’d ever heard was over and she had developed a crush on you. That’s all…. okay maybe some mental illness too. These are things I have to remember when I play at various nursing homes. The toughest crowd I had was last Christmas when I played for a large group of Alzheimer’s patients. Most of them just went to sleep and snored but a few got vocal and had to be removed by the staff. It was odd to be shouted down for playing the harp. Everyone absorbs the experience in a unique way. You’re a special guy with a lot of talent don’t let this phase you.

Aaron, I just finished building myself a Pleyel style 62 string 5/7 cross strung chromatic harp. It’s been quite the experience. It’s been strung for two weeks now and seems to be accepting its role as a tonal instrument. Now for the fun part! Learning to play it. I’m comfortable playing pedal and lever harps one technique issue I’m dealing with is placing my fingers out of their natural sequence in order to reach up or down to play the pentatonic strings. As well as the cross eyed factor and getting lost. This will get better with more practice. Tuning takes a long time but I’m sure that will speed up as time goes on as well. I do miss being able to play glisses in different keys but there is more to playing the harp than glisses. Here is a picture of my latest harp. Once he stabilizes and I learn to play him I’ll post a clip or two.

We’ve called to report this and were offered another subscription but what good is it when every issues arrives torn and sometimes wet?

I’d like a real music stand and a new tuner and while I’m at it a nice simi grand or grand pedal harp. But I’ll be happy to just spend time with family and friends.
