More about Trista

On her works, Trista says: “Nature, color and emotion inspire my compositions. They sometimes start with a practical seed of an idea that might help students develop technique, or with an ethereal seed of an idea that unveils itself in a tender moment, during a walk, or in a dream. Once I commit to writing down a few measures, the piece starts to bloom into what it wants to be and becomes a surprise I couldn’t expect or predict. Allowing each seed to grow and unfurl in its own way is the ultimate lesson in learning to listen and trust.”

Our pick

This piece feels like a warm hug. The rich lower tones of the harp mixed with the interesting harmonies and rhythms creates a really relaxed, yet exciting work.

More about Rachel

On her works, Rachel says: “I really just write and arrange tunes that I enjoy playing in the hope that others will enjoy playing them too! Much of my work is arranging tunes, whether that’s melodies from Scotland, Ireland or the Isle of Man. Our amazing instrument really lends itself so well to arranging and I simply love that I can put my own creative stamp on the traditional melodies from these countries, enabling them to be passed on further through generations throughout the world.”

Our pick

I love the variety in this collection. You get to learn tunes from all over the world like Scotland, Ireland, Shetland, Cornwall, Isle of Man, and more. Rachel includes excellent fingering markings and her arrangements are simple allowing the melodies to shine!

Corkey Christman

Corkey Christman (1936–2017) received his degree from Curtis Institute after studying under Carlos Salzedo and Marilyn Costello, with additional instruction from Alice Chalifoux. Corkey’s varied performance career included extended dinner music engagements at venues in the Berkshires, where his innovative classical, folk, and pop arrangements made devoted fans of many Tanglewood regulars.

More about Corkey

On his arrangements, publisher Bill Van Patten says: “Corkey’s arrangements have an appealing simplicity that’s combined with whimsy. There’s nothing that flaunts its creativity or is weird for its own sake, but they each have their own unique approach. I think they’re wonderful for dinner music gigs because they are interesting but don’t call too much attention to themselves, as well as being great for teaching students how to bring out a melody in a non-traditional arrangement. If there’s a single statement that sums up why Corkey did what he did, it’s what he wrote about himself: ‘I produce art because I have no other choice; I feel compelled to. If I stopped there would be a big hole, nothing.’ The first arrangements Corkey created were of Christmas carols. He loved Carlos Salzedo’s Christmas arrangements, but many of them were challenging to maintain while gigging all the time. Corkey created his own using the style of Salzedo as inspiration, but keeping them more accessible. Check out a few of those below:

Our pick

This traditional American folk song arrangement is truly beautiful. Between the lower register resonance and using the upper register for melody and textural parts, it creates a great solo piece for a recital or background music gig. As Bill Van Patten says, it’s the perfect balance between simplicity and whimsy!

More about Tamsin

On her works, Tamsin says “The main thing that I try to bear in mind when both composing and arranging is ‘playability’: is this piece actually enjoyable to play? It is important to me in my work as a professional lever harpist to try to demonstrate that the [lever harp] is capable of holding its own in everything from folk to jazz to electronica and atonal music–the list is endless! When arranging music, I always try to create arrangements that are both harmonically satisfying AND which fall under the fingers nicely. When composing my own music, I love experimenting with different styles and genres; I am fascinated by music in all its forms and will often give myself compositional challenges to try to write in a particular style, be it ragtime, Breton folk style or mid-20th century modernism.”

Our pick

Tamsin’s lever harp rendition of this classic Debussy melody is just mesmerizing! It has been adapted so well and doesn’t sacrifice any of the gorgeous harmonies. Advanced lever harpists, this is a repertoire must!
