*Ondulations à la Surface de l’eau

by Tamsin Dearnley

Continuous, flowing arpeggios up and down the harp are at the forefront of this Debussy-esque work by Tamsin Dearnley. The rippling effect of the notes is both meditative and romantic.

*Believe

by Marianne Gubri

Something about constant arpeggios creates such a calming effect and this original piece by Marianne Gubri is no different. Let this dreamy piece enchant a yoga class or play it at home when you need a moment of zen.

*Forest Dreams

by Elizabeth Sutherland

This gorgeous piece is inspired by the Dandenong Ranges in Australia where composer Elizabeth Sutherland lives. The ranges consist of rolling hills, towering ash trees, and lush green foliage. You can picture the magical, serene scene while playing this relaxing piece.

*Altt Crioch

by Pippa Reid-Foster

Another dreamy nature-inspired work! This unique piece by Scottish harpist Pippa Reid-Foster is named after a burn that runs through the Loch Ard Forest. The 6/8 time signatures, grace notes, and harmonics add to the dreaminess of this flowy work.

*Floating on Saturn

by Fabio Rizza

More arpeggios help set the tone of this expressive and ethereal work by Fabio Rizza. You’ll feel like you’ve entered a mystical atmosphere! I especially love the use of harmonics in this piece that add to the whimsy.

The Silver Swan

by Kirsten Agresta Copely

If you’re looking for a piece to play for a live yoga session, I highly recommend this ambient work by Kirsten Agresta Copely. There is a lot of space in the melody allowing for the feeling of serenity to wash over you.

Eddies

by Laura Zaerr

The unusual time signature of 11/16 along with the repetitive motives used in this original piece by Laura Zaerr creates a trance-like state for the listener. Slowed down a bit, this piece would be perfect for any healing harp setting.

*Elegy

by Brook Boddie

This evocative piece by the late Brook Boddie is a great repertoire addition. I have performed it for both church services and funeral visitations. It provides a meditative atmosphere allowing one to think. I also recommend checking out the rest of Boddie’s pieces here.

*Beyond the Horizon and Celestial Spirals

by Lauren Scott

This is a great collection to use for yoga and other meditation classes. The works leave a lot of room for contemplation and just evoke the epitome of calmness. The pieces share the same three note motif and can thus be played together as a two movement work, or individually. Both pieces use some extended techniques, which help lead the listener to an “out of this world” soundscape.

*The Spirits of the Seven Colours

by Daniele Garella

Every piece in this collection by Daniele Garella is absolutely beautiful. The seven pieces are dedicated to the seven colors in the rainbow “and their energy, and to the spirits that govern the colors,” says Garella. Although each is different in character, they are all quite calming. My personal favorites are “Red” and “Blu.”

*The Clair de Lune Book

by Darhon Rees-Rohrbacher

Debussy’s Clair de Lune is one of the most popular romantic era pieces out there. Not only that, but the piece is also known to be very relaxing for people. Darhon Rees-Rohrbacher has arranged this classic for lever harp, pedal harp, and for duets with both flute or violin. These versions, slightly simplified from the original piano solo, fit easily in the hands while retaining the integrity and flow of this masterpiece.

*Ankaa

by Marianne Gubri

This collection by Marianne Gubri includes nine pieces that are perfect for harp therapy sessions, yoga and relaxation, and concerts. My favorites are “Destati,” “Occurrens,” and “Embrasse-toi.”
