    Hey. I agree that everyone should be able play any instrument they like, without judgment
    on them or the instrument.. I hate it how people stereotype the harp as a “girly” or “gay”
    instrument. The harp is one of the most ancient of instruments. David from the Bible
    played the harp, I’ve even seen a male harpist at a Metallica concert. o_o;

    I don’t play harp.. yet. It’d be a dream to be a harpist, and I’m trying to convince my
    parents to let me take lessons, so who knows.

    People classify the harp as a girly instrument. Since when did musical instruments have
    genders/gender requirements?

    “The Princess Diaries,” “Haunted Mansion” (well more or less without a visible harpist,” “The Matrix,” there are a lot of movies and tv shows that just use harps as props. *shakes fist at Hollywood* ‘The Munsters,’ ‘That’s So Raven,’ ‘Oprah’ (on occasion),and a few more, but I’ve been put on the spot, so I can’t think of them now.

    Hope that helps anyway.

    in reply to: Are you able to get a music degree using a lever harp? #167206

    Nope. But you can still go pro on Lever harp. Look at Sylvia Woods. If its a degree you’re seeking, you’ll definetely need to make the transition to pedal harp. But don’t worry, its not too hard! Pedal harp rocks!
    Most harpists will seek a Harp Performance degree, or where available, a Harp Pedagogy degree. That is not to say you cannot obtain a Music Ed degree. Usually someone who plays a traditional instrument (whoa! not that the harp isn’t, but “traditional” here is meaning violin, cello, flute, trumpet, tbone, etc) will be the ones seeking a Music Ed degree. These people usually have a general knowledge of the more common instruments. You could definetely do it, but you’d have your work cut out for you. Best of luck.

    I do remember watching The Bishop’s Wife but it was before I began playing the harp.

    David Ice has put together a wonderful multi-media presentation of harps and harpists in the movies which can sometimes be seen at AHS conferences.
