ParticipantIf I remember right, the Malaysian Philarmonic Orchestra, in Kuala Lampur have two harpists… Sebastien Horrer and Tan Keng Hong, principal and co respectively… don’t know their level or anything, or if they do private tuition, which I assume they do.

ParticipantWell, I can only relate to this from my own experience, when as a young student I first learnt from a harpist that was a principal with a major orchestra. There is something very inspiring about learning from someone that performs in an orchestra, and being able to go and hear them play, follow the score, and talk about their experiences as a performer – and as a performer that performs all the time.
Of course, soloists too, do hold alot of the better teaching positions – and they too are performing and recording all the time. Which is wonderful for their pupils.

Sent you some clarification via your email Tacye.
Regards,
Rosemary.

ParticipantHello Tayce,
Thanks for that info. I learnt the work with the harmonics written where you make the note, not where they sound – so that is interesting.
Maybe I have an unusual edition (Sikorski, Hamburg 1972), but if the harmonics are written where they sound and made an octave lower on the string, this would create problems in the fourth bar – as you would be making the

ParticipantOne of my cat likes to go belly up in front of my harp while I play and the other likes to put her teeth on a vibrating string while sitting on my lap. Obviously not a lot of serious practice gets done with that one around….Lol!
