You can also see if you can borrow a case from another harpist in the area. I have done that several times when I needed to ship my harp to different places because I don’t own a case myself but I know a couple harpists who have a case that fits my harp.

Years ago I tried to rent a harp on Hololulu for a performance. The harpist there, whom I was referred to through the AHS, was extremely rude and unhelpful. I hope you don’t run in to that person because it was just a terrible experience altogether.

Ray Pool American Classics. Some of the songs in this book, volume 1, are not hard. I get a lot of compliments from older people when I play these and first got the book because one of the songs was the anniversary song for a couple having a 50th wedding anniversary party.

Those gloves are supposed to do a lot to help your hand so maybe look at them just to see. You can get some in the Mary Maxim catalogue/

Wenonah Govea has a good arrangement in one of her books of hymns with two other hymns. Haven’t tried it on lever harp though.

For those of us who don’t live in the UK can you tell us about this event after you go?

There is an annual festival each year in the DR and a harpist from the US goes there. He is a student of Susann McDonald. I don’t know what his name is or what the festival is called but he takes his harp probably he can tell you how to get your harp there.

I think you’re being respectful Natty. The problem is that sometimes people who don’t really know a lot about the techniques end ep using the elobows as the only example they can think of … or the most obvious one. A lot of times it takes years of study before you are really ready to think about and read about and understand the method for what it is so when you are taking lessons sometimes you’re learning to play with that method but you’re not always learning that much about the method itself because you’re not ready yet. Sometimes people don’t get beyond that level of thinking about technique. Your teacher’s probably makign sure you know that there are some people out there who have really strong views one way or the other and are not always respectful about the other but most of the people are.

Yes though I think the real issue is the chemicals that stay on your nails and possibly get in to your skin and you know they push cuticle back which looks good but cuticle is there to protect the part of your finger where the nail comes out and pushing it back opens that area for bacteria and viruses it’s just altogether not a good idea but the idea at the end for a natural manicure is nice. Don’t do it until after you’ve practiced because that almond oil is just like moisturizer and it could cause discoloring on the strings. best do it before bedtime so it can soak in and be gone in the morning.

Precisely! Thanks Sam. When you do a masterclass you pick things that aren’t easy but are fixable in a brief timespan because that’s all you have and that’s what’s expected. Because that’s what happens the teacher can seem to be a mircale worker when they’re just a good teacher choosing quick things to fix. Then the student thinks they should rush to study with that person but what they should do is take a lesson. Better yet a few of them. Then they get a fair idea of the whole package over time. I did not mean they try to deceive people in a masterclass setting.

It’s been 23 years since I graduated college but there are three harpists in my area who each had a very rough bachelor’s degree because the teacher was not supportive and because the teacher allowed a very hostile environment where students would practice each others orchestra parts in the next room and create interferences with practice
