ParticipantI find there is plenty of room in the highest octave on the Pratt Chamber Harp (lever harp made by John Pratt). And a gorgeous sound in that register (and all others)!

Participantlive in Santa Barbara (lucky me!) and lucky you for getting to come for the summer! Folk Mote is a great resource for renting harps (and buying). They have mostly Dusty Stings, Blevins and sometimes a Triplett. It is a small store with a huge heart and fabulous people! Laurie Rasmussen is my teacher and she is quite extraordinary. She teaches privately but uses a small music room at Folk Mote (which happens to be downtown). I’d highly recommend taking some classes with Laurie while you are here. She does own quite a few harps herself and I do believe her website states that she rents out some—but of course, not her major beauties!
Housing…..of course, Craigslist is always good too. I imagine you know it is a pricey town for renting and owning.best~
KarenPS From your website, it looks like you would want to rent a pedal harp…..you might need to contact Christine Holvick (google her) for that.

ParticipantHere in Santa Barbara, CA we were extraordinarily fortunate to have Laurie Rasmussen as our harp teacher and she has taken on the added responsibility of creating an ensemble group with her students. We meet twice a month and will perform the songs we work on together in May at our annual recital. If that goes well, there is a chance we will play “out” together as an offering at a nursing home or the like. We are all at different levels which is a testament to her teaching and ability to create a framework that we can all fit into to create music together at the level we are at individually. More than half of us are students who took up the harp later in life.
Perhaps your harp teacher would give this idea some consideration.

ParticipantI have not had any luck hunting down the Kathy Bundock Moore harp theory books there were mentioned on this post. If anyone has any luck and can share where they found them, I’d appreciate it. Thanks!

Participant….just to mention…other than the harp, the movie is not worth watching!

ParticipantThanks to each of you for your posts. I think the Zoom is more inline with what I am thinking of but would like a simplified gadget since I am really only wanting to use it to practice and sometimes to put on my computer to put on my iPod or send a song to my parents or something.
Is anyone familiar with Musicians Friends Hand-Held Stereo Digital Recorder?
here is the link if interested:
http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Musicians-Gear-Handheld-Digital-Recorder?sku=582222
It looks more simplistic and the price point reasonable.
Thanks again. I love this forum and so fabulous to have a harp community.

ParticipantI am looking for an audio recorder NOT a video but thanks.

ParticipantEverything that I have read says that Harpo never formally trained to play the harp. There is some interesting stuff about his son creating music notation that Harpo could understand and that due to Harpo’s unique style of playing and creating, there isn’t really music notation available for other harpist to try to play.

ParticipantI am a yoga teacher and long-time practioner too. I love live music with class and think it will work really nicely with a restorative class. My one suggestion would be to perhaps play at someone else’s class the first time so that you are not juggling going around and giving assists, being a wordsmith as you lead the relaxation, etc. It might just help to feel the harp experience first yourself before trying to manage it all. Wish I could be there!

ParticipantMy issue arrived yesterday!

ParticipantI find the colored rubber rings/band very helpful…you look up and are very clear which lever needs to be flipped. I am an dental hygienist and most dental offices use small colored rubber rings to put around the instruments so that everyone can tell whose instruments belong to whom (preferences, etc)
If you are friendly with your dental office, stop by and ask for a few. (you’ll need the rings for large instrument handles not slender. I made up a few little containers and gave them to my harp teacher and she passes then along as she sees fit and says it is amazing the bright smiles of relief that come over her students faces when she presents them!! Good luck overcoming this obstacle!karen
