John McKParticipant
If it’s not too late. . .
There’s *loads* of early (medieval and renn) music that works well for a holiday or specifically Christmas themed album.
One of my favorite (no, THE favorite) Xmas albums is “On Yoolis Night” by Anonymous 4. It’s a quartet of female vocalists singing seasonal music from the 12-15th centuries. It’s great stuff. A lot of it could probably be adopted to a lever harp fairly easily.
John McKParticipantPretty sure it’s nylon. I can;t tell on the technique question.

Corrina Hewat playing the jig she wrote for Martyn Bennett.
John McKParticipantI would consider taking a workshop or a few lessons, if possible. In the long run it will be well worth the costs.
John McKParticipantRight-on about the independent hands thing!
I’ve had a few chances to try out a friend’s button accordion about a year ago. . . talk about a weird instrument. . .
John McKParticipantIf you have a captive audience (IE, not a wallpaper gig) a Fisher actually workswell. . .
John McKParticipantTalk about the one that got away! Olwell bamboos have appreciated a great deal in the past 6 years or so. My own flute. . . venerable is probably a better description than beautiful.
I’m actually *not* lefthanded in the traditional sense – when I started playing highland pipes, I sat ___across the table____ from my first teacher and _mirrored_ everything she did. Literally mirrored it – hence, my right hand is always on top of my left for woodwinds. It was months before we discovered the issue.
I’m torn between a Campbell Boston and something more along the lines of the Wartburg harp. I absolutely love the hollow-sounding twang of smaller early harps, but they lack a lot in the oomph department. I can’t afford a Thurau but that would be ideal.
John McKParticipantWell, another forumite is getting my Thor Serenade on Tuesday. . . I’m going to be getting an early music harp at some point soon to replace it. THAT is like breaking up with a serious girlfriend
John McKParticipant“The pieces were boring to me and I hate reading music. I can do it, but it’s hard and I avoid it at all costs.”
Are you in an ensemble learning required pieces?
Are you in an academic program with required pieces?
These are rhetorical questions. Why put yourself through this?
Find some music that *you want* to play. If you can get a teacher’s help with that, go for it. If not, drop the teacher. Taking music lessons should NOT be like algebra class or tax season.
FWIW, Maybe you could try a summer course or workshop. My first formal lessons were from Billy Jackson, before I even owned a harp. He gave me a great start and enough to work on for months to come.
John McKParticipantThe only instrument I’ve ever named (which stuck) was a Rickenbacker 330 electric guitar with a quilted maple finish. She was named “Emma.” The rock/metal/pop music playlist in my itunes is now called “Emma’s Favorites.” I sold Emma to fund my first harp, which in hindsight wasn’t a great idea.
For decades I had a bass guitar which I called “the wife” but more as a description than as a personifying name.
John McKParticipantSo what’s the hidden connection between flute and harps?
John McKParticipantI’ve owned and played a lot of musical instruments. . .
John McKParticipantYou could . . .
John McKParticipantCongrats, Red! This is great:) Good to hear you’re playing out.
John McKParticipantWow. . . small world! I attended Har-Bur Middle in 7th grade. . . .that would have been. . .1985-86 I think. . .
