This is not a very pleasant subject but then neither is dealing with nasty and unbalanced people.

Unfortunately, SOME PEOPLE are nasty vipers and they love creating drama for others.

And as Carl put it, some narcissistic people can’t help but be any other way.

It is sad for the rest of us who have to deal with their unhealthy and toxic behavior but it is better to aware of it than fall victim to them.

I am lucky, most of the time I work with wonderful people and have good friends who are “normal” and pleasant and not interested in creating problems in other people’s lives. Life is too short and I am not interested in negativity with others.

I am far more interested in harmony especially with people who are interested in the same things I am.

After all there is nothing better than PLAYING BEAUTIFUL MUSIC and SHARING in the experience with others who also LOVE IT!

The thing with narcissists, at least for me, is that they broadside me when I least expect it.

Not only does that woman not belong in the industry, one wonders how she can have lasted for more than one job!

David- Your post illustrates two of the core symptoms of narcissists. First, they are always egregious liars. The truth to a narcissist is whatever is convenient at the moment. You can see this all the time in criminal trials. Just look at the Casey Anthony case. This woman is the ultimate narcissist. Secondly, as you mention, narcissists perceive the world in a completely different way from a mentally healthy person. When they blow up with no obvious provocation, it’s because in their warped minds you did something, on purpose no less, to hurt them. They always assume that everyone is trying to hurt them. So really there is no winning with them. You did the right thing blowing up, in a very articulate way, at that woman. That blow up on your part notified her that there’s a limit to what you will tolerate from her. Being a narcissist, she still thinks that she did nothing wrong. But standing up to her at least made her put the brakes on her behavior.

Even though this subject is not totally harp-related, I find the entire subject fascinating, especially explained by Carl and Laura. It helps me explore my life experiences with these kind of personality traits…. from family, neighbors, coworkers, etc.

Laura’s comment “This is especially aggregious when they involve religion in their sanctimonious and self-righteous behavior” is especially meaningful to me, which explains why I now choose to love my only sibling “from a distance”.

One of the nice things I’ve learned is life is ultimately about choices, and we can choose to let these people destroy us, or we can totally ignore their behavior.

I have a theory that God plants these people, usually singular, one by one in our lives. There’s usually one in the neighborhood, they come and go in the workplace, there’s always one in your place of worship, and there can also be a few floating around the harp community…

Christian- Unfortunately there are a lot of people like this in the world. It is not an uncommon personality type. It’s particularly destructive when it’s a family member, and worse when it’s a parent. The damage they do is catastrophic and permanent.
