Ever heard of the “power of TikTok?” The popular app features videos on all subjects from artists singing or musicians playing to people performing funny skits, walking you through DIY crafts, showing off adorable puppies, etc. Most of these videos feature music sound clips behind them. Due to this, TikTok has become one of the tastemakers of popular music. With over 1 billion active monthly users, a trending sound from a video clip can alter an artist’s career, make a song hit the Billboard charts, or just become really popular. This entrancing sea shanty went viral on TikTok after Nathan Evans’ a capella version garnered millions of views. This led to many other singers joining in the craze to sing their versions, often collaborating with other TikTok creators to harmonize. Stephanie Claussen’s arrangement is very accessible for the harp and keeps the intensity of the popular versions, including a section where you get to add in percussion by using your lap!

moonlight sonata
A true staple among the classical repertoire, you may not have known that this piece has also become synonymous with “sad” dog videos, but not in the way you might think. These videos feature perfectly happy pups who are simply (and hilariously) not able to catch treats or toys despite their best efforts. Marilyn Rummel’s abridged version makes this Beethoven classic available to both lever and pedal harpists while remaining faithful to the original music.

Ed Sheeran’s popular love song “Perfect” has dominated the engagement and wedding side of TikTok for years. From proposal videos to first dances at weddings, relationship montage videos, and more, it has been a wonderful backdrop for people to share their love. CANON IN D
Over the last year, “Canon in D” mashups have become very popular for musicians to post on TikTok as suggestions for bridal entrances at weddings. I’ve seen Pachelbel’s masterpiece mashed up with songs by The Beatles, Queen, Goo Goo Dolls, One Direction, theme songs from popular TV shows, you name it! If you haven’t heard of the Bad Romance challenge, allow me to enlighten you. Each video of the popular TikTok challenge features a group of family or friends who take turns singing a riff from Lady Gaga’s iconic “Bad Romance” chorus. The goal is to remain silent while each person sings…even when people who may not have the best singing voice participate.The result is hilarious! Eine kleine nachtmusik
I had to include this piece by Mozart because I have seen it used time and time again in countless TikTok videos. Check out our awesome version for three pedal harps by Sally Course. One of my favorite uses of the piece is by a creator who is constantly trying to keep classical music cool and relevant–be sure to watch his TikTok!
