Pendulum is a piece about motion, trajectory, distance, and the illusion of stillness. I created the opening musical idea while experimenting at my harp with notes using xylophonique technique, and regular or ordinario technique. The resonance of a regular note as opposed to the xylophonique note would make the small idea come back into itself naturally, creating a lovely arc that later led to the raising and cascading glissandi in the middle of the piece. I wanted the performers to feel like they could get lost in the unpredictable path of a swinging force, so to create that beautiful chaos, I wrote for the mixing colors produced by fingertips and fingernails, always under the never-ending journey of the starting tempo. The ending is a gentle return back to where we started. The last dyads of the piece are purposefully and naturally dissonant so as to show that even though the pendulum has finished its journey, there is an unseen energy still inside it. Stillness cannot exist. Motion is inseparable to this universe.
