Clap Battles, by Stephen Dunstone, is a collection of 138 clapping duets with optional piano accompaniment. The main book includes 120 progressive micro duets that gradually introduce more challenging rhythms, note values, time signatures, and syncopation along with 18 performance pieces. Also offered are two companion books to expand learning and performance opportunities: Piano Accompaniments to the Performance Pieces, and Reading Rhythms for Beginners. (The companion books are also sold separately.)

As well as being one-to-one duets, these pieces are also great fun to use with a whole class of students, harp ensembles, and even an entire audience. Although there are officially 120 micro duets, by mixing and matching, you could potentially create thousands. And by putting three or four parts together, you can also make trios and quartets. Having a live piano accompaniment is great for performances, but there are also free downloadable audio tracks for practice purposes.

    I find CLAP BATTLES very useful in my Studio! Unfortunately, it calls for A4 paper size, which I have found to be completely unavailable in Los Angeles, which is saying a lot… Printing it on standard 8.5×11 renders the bottom staff of each page cut off. Check paper size before you buy!
