About the composer
Johann Kaspar Ferdinand Fischer (1656-1746), who worked as the Kapellmeister to Ludwig Wilhelm of Baden for most of his life, was considered by J.S. Bach’s biographer, Johann Nikolaus Forkel (1749-1818) to be one of the best composers for keyboard music during the Baroque period. But because many of his compositions did not survive, Fischer is not as well-known as the younger J.S. Bach (1685-1750). Fischer was responsible for bringing the French Baroque style to Germany and also made innovations to the Baroque keyboard and orchestra suite forms. Bach and Handel were familiar with his music and borrowed from it, as was common practice at the time.
