Hi, well, I was a teen male harpist till this year. I just turned 20..
I am sure there’re lots of them out there but they are just too shy. Interesting when I was reading my teacher’s old harp magazines (some even dated back to the 70s), there were LOTS more male harpists back then! I wonder where they are now…I guess the stereotype that harp is a girly instrument has driven many guys away. I think all instruments should be enjoyed by everyone in the world!…
Come on out guys!!I began playing the harp when I was nine years old, but I played piano for three years before that. I absolutely love harp, and I plan to make my career out of it:)!!
When I started playing harp, I rented a lever harp, a Lyon & Healy Troubador. I haven’t had my pedal harp that long, I got it in January 2000, but I have gotten so far with it! I have a Salvi Aurora, and I went with my teacher to Chicago, to pick it out, after we’d ordered it of course:) It was great fun:)!!
i’m 17 years old and have been playing with an orchestra for only a year… all i can say is *stick with it*! it was so hard for me the first few weeks of playing, but after awaile you just get a natural rhythm in your head. plus, songs with harp or other arcane accompaniment usually have a similar format to them, so fear not! good luck!

I teach elementary music in Texas. We have a fairly complete Orff program. I am also a harpist. I am a firm believer that young kids should have a lot of Orff/Kodaly/singing/ movement before they tackle any musical instrument’s potential frustrations. They will have developed much musical perception before having to deal with the technique of any instrument especially the harp which is really built for larger hands. There are many “Kindermusik” type day care centers or private schools where Orff is in place.
