Dry, splitting, cracking, bleeding? Sounds like a bad case of E. Bola.

A possible solution to the problem:

My husband and several members of his family suffer from this painful problem. No one is a harpist, however.

Where are you, that you can’t have a teacher? That’s a shame. And, I hate to tell you this, but Scintillation and Variations sur un theme dans le style ancien are pieces you should be coaching with a Salzedo teacher who knows them. I can help you, but in Philadelphia. But they are great pieces to know and great for you. I agree, it is so hard to work alone, still is for me now, but I could not continue without a teacher at your stage. I hope you find someone, and let me know if I can help.

Bag Balm/Udder Balm and similar products are also easily available at quilt or sewing centers. Quilters also suffer from this malady.

If you are truly getting bizarre email from yourself it can only mean that someone has your Yahoo address and password and is using it to send mail.

There is also an excellent book by Simon Louvish called Monkey Business on the brothers. I think Harpo dubbed many of his solos, because you can see that the strings seem too loose to be tuned, or because he is obviously playing a loom or piano harp.

My teacher’s daughter started playing about age 4.

I think you could also use the Pathfinder Studies and Art of Modulating profitably. You might also begin basic orchestra parts such as by Rimsky Korsakov or Tchaikovsky. And Baroque and classical solos, of course. Don’t forget Solos for the Harp Player.

If the child really wants to do it, it is not too soon. The bigger problem is an instrument whose strings would be close enough together to suit his or her hand size. I met a child about that age who was afire to play the harp.

Please read my posts about Standard Repertoire and related discussions. I would be happy to help you further with specific pieces. It also depends a lot on the entrance requirements of the various schools would be applying to. It would help me to know the kind of technique you learned and are teaching. Feel free to contact me.

Excuse me, but I am certain that it is Gail Laughton’s hands you see in the movie “The Big Store”, where the edit from Harpo beginning and ending the lengthy sequence to another pair of hands is quite obvious, and the playing is sufficiently different to show that Harpo is indeed playing in the other movies. My favorite has always been “A Night in Casablanca.” There is a movie, the title of which I have forgotten, in which the characters go to a nightclub, and sit at a table and actually listen to a harpist play a lengthy solo, but I can’t remember the movie. It was a leading man like Cary Grant or Gary Cooper, it was from the 1940s.
On television, “Golden Girls” and “Frasier” featured excellent harp guest spots, as did “Cheers.”
