It’s great that “Classical Gas” made such an impression on your life! I remember it being the first guitar tune that piqued my interest. I was 10 years old when I first saw Mason Williams perform it on the “Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour”. I fell in love with the song then and never forgot it.

How did the harp come into your life?

I just played one of Brook Boddie’s Dusty harps (“Gabriel”) in the meditation garden of a local church for Holy Saturday before Easter. Another harpist was with me. While she was playing Brook’s “Upon the Willows”, the wind began playing through Gabriel’s strings, in accompaniment to the music. It was a lovely time of remembrance.

I wish that Carl’s new Tournier book had been published before I bought these pieces separately! Oh well, I’m so excited about it that I have decided that I need to dust off my semi-grand and get to work once the book arrives!

In my case, I did the opposite. I jumped from pedal harp to lever harp as an adult! I love my pedal harp, but I became so engrossed with pursuing pop and jazz on my 36 string Dusty lever harp that I have no time to go back to it. Everything that I do professionally is now on the lever harp.

I prefer to do warm ups and to review small, tricky passages of difficult pieces on the day of the performance. I agree with Balfour; if I don’t know the music thoroughly the days/weeks before the gig, then I likely won’t have it at performance level by cramming a few hours beforehand.
