someone who is willing to work thouroughly on your personal needs, listens and communicates well; who would be ytour friend and you teacher. credentials are lovely, interesting and to an extent, quite necessary. but if they play the harp well and can communicate well, patiently and concisely what you should do, then they are the one for you. a teacher who inspires you, gives you confidence and is not given to verbally bashing anybody (least of all you!) ,or so-called “politics”, will make you a well- rounded harpist and a pleasant musician to work with.good luck. i suppose in the states you could get it from vanderbilt music or lyra music or even sylvia woods…all have websites.
you can’t go wrong with Grossi’s metodo par arpa, they have lovely simple, useful exercises which are mainly suitable for lever harp, as they are mainly just ion the one key. but they do get progressively more difficult. just start from the very beginning, with the very first exercise and see how you do. good luck finding a teacher,
hey michelle.you must not be discouraged. Are you learning with an actual teacher or just from the Woods tutor? if you have a teacher, then talk to them and say how you feel. he/she is bound to have some advice for you. to me you sound diligent and hardworking and you sound as if you are striving to play to the best of your ability; please rember that well feel that way at some point. if you ever feel frustrated play some chords and arpeggios, you know, “fluff” and remind yourself why you started playing in the first place, play a piece you know well or just simply walk off, read a magazine or have a coffee.i feel discouraged sometmes as well, but I find this is often causedd by thinking too deeply about what other people think.please keep us posted as to how you are gettting on. chin up !
Serina must be SO pleased that we deigned to answer her question. i think perhaps that being a violent harpist is peculiar to the male ones? anyone? p.s you all scare me.
Joanna newsom…although her voice is really weird, she sings and plays harp in a very co-ordinated way. I try and sing and play at the same time, but find it a struggle too sometimes; it is much easier to sing with my Irish harp than my pedal harp. my cat’s too afraid of my harps to go anywhere near them. First time we brought a harp home and my cat heard it…she ran a freakin’ mile. What about teenagers? teenage gutarists are LOADS more dangerous than cats…

Steven, I think it would be unwise to take any of the above criticisms personally. Just remember that all criticisms here are meant purely for constructive purposes, not to make you feel or look bad. When somone gives you a criticism, no matter how insignificant it may seem then you must take it with good grace. Doing otherwise WILL make you look bad.
