I know I’m responding to an old post, but back in the 70’s my Physics-Student boyfriend told me he could get my 22 into a VW Beetle. Not only was he right, but once we figured it out, my cellist-partner and I frequently put the harp, cello and her and me into that VW Bug (after taking out both the passenger seat and the backseat). I can’t remember exactly what she sat on — but we all fit!

Today I looked at a Ford Edge. After pulling the drivers seat forward my harp cover (L&H 23 with cronw) fit in with no problem. There is a slight tilt where the back seats are, is this a problem? Does anybody have this SUV and use a concert grand? Need to buy a new car in the next week or so!

Well, to answer my own question; yes. A 23 fits nicely in a Ford Edge. My new harpmobile will be delivered tomorrow!

The Honda Fit’s back seat bench flips up, so I could stand two small folk harps side by side on the floor. There is height to spare, in case I ever upgrade to a 30+ string harp.

Yikes Janelle, what a thrill that must have been! Strangely, I had the same experience in a Buick station wagon many years ago… my entire family in the car, rounding the bend on a mountain road with a steep drop-off to one side, axle broke, wheel fell off, car ground to a halt at the very edge of the precipice… It was exciting. Thank goodness there was no harp in the car at the time.

Anyway, you have a good excuse to go car shopping! Let us know what you find.

Looking into a new car to transport my Salzedo.. Does anyone know which models both easily transport CGs and get good mileage? I currently drive a 1993 Volvo 960 Wagon, but it’s falling apart. I like the ease of loading the harp into a station wagon, but am looking at all different types of vehicles. Thanks for your input!

Sure can’t recommend my car–it’s a VW Beetle. But in your situation, if I could afford it, I would keep a roomy gas-guzzler JUST for the purpose of transporting my Salzedo or whatever and use something more compact and less gasoholic for all other purposes. That might turn you into a 3-car family, but I think the savings could be significant.

Old thread, but for the question on the changing EPA ratings, in 2008 the EPA changed how it calculates fuel economy to try to more accurately reflect the mileage under normal driving. If a model’s numbers changed significantly for a model, that’s probably why.

The Ford Flex is terrific. We also drove the Taurus X and the Edge before we bought, and all of them are low and wide and have a square area in back.
The Flex has the lowest gas mileage but they have wonderful safety ratings.
I’d take a Ford before any other vehicle available.

The Ford Flex is a fine car for moving the harp and all related equipment, they can also get rather expensive with all the ‘toys’.
