Notes from the arranger:
Peer Gynt Suites op. 46 and op. 55 are probably among the most popular compositions by Grieg. The four-movement suite op. 55 culminates in the meditative song of Solvejg, in which she relates her impatient yearning for Peer Gynt. Between the minor-key slow verses, an inset Nordic dance continues this melancholy-meditative mood, despite its seemingly light dotted rhythms. As if anticipating the great success this song would achieve, Grieg published the composition in a variety of instrumental and vocal versions.
