Willi Maerz has arranged the Russian folk song “Red Sarafan” for four pedal harps and choir (SATB). “Sarafan” refers to a traditional festive costume worn by both men and women. Maerz says that this melancholy song “tells of the fears and doubts of a young woman regarding her forthcoming wedding. It expresses what is often called the ‘Russian soul,’ a seemingly unquenchable thirst for sorrowfulness, which, cast in music, can be so magnificently charming.”
