Willi Maerz’s Goetterfunken-Globalized is for four pedal harps. This piece is based on Ludwig van Beethoven’s famous “Ode to Joy” melody from Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125. Willi Maerz then takes the theme around the world and writes it in different styles, such as a waltz representing Vienna, a tango representing Argentina, etc.

Note from the composer

The work was written for the Munich Harp Quartet to perform at the German Pavilion at EXPO 2025 in Osaka. In keeping with the theme of a “world exhibition” on the one hand, and the great popularity of the final chorus in Japan on the other, I decided to compose this musical joke. The variations should definitely be announced humorously, for which I provide some suggestions in the sheet music. Of course, it is also a good idea to let the audience guess the respective countries. In any case, I wish the performers much fun and enjoyment with this musical joke.
