Note from the arranger
The first carol, “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” has at least three tunes that are in common usage. I have chosen the classic British melody of ‘”Forest Green” rather than the tune “St. Louis” which is more well-known in the US.
“The First Nowel” was originally a Cornish folk tune (Roud folk index no. 682), and was first published as a Christmas carol in 1823.
“We Three Kings of Orient Are” was composed in 1857 by the American clergyman and composer John Henry Hopkins Jr. Originally written for a Christmas pageant in New York, the song has now found popularity worldwide.
