Tamsin Dearnley has arranged the Scottish tune “The Grey Silkie of Sule Skerry” for solo lever or pedal harp. This traditional song from the Orkney and Shetland islands to the far north of Scotland tells the story of a young woman who is seduced by a male Selkie and bears his child, only for the Selkie to come to claim the child and take him back to the sea when it is grown. The sheet music contains the basic melody, lyrics and fingering, a simple arrangement for beginners, and an intermediate arrangement (transcribed from the video below). The ‘Silkies’ of ‘Selkies’ of the far northern isles of Scotland are a race of otherworldly creatures who take the form of seals when in their home in the sea, but who transform into mortal form when they come ashore–inevitably to wreak romantic havoc on the lives of the people they encounter. There are many different versions of these lyrics, all with slightly different details. The moral of the story is clear, however–be aware of men who are too handsome and who sneak into your room at night…!
