Note from the arranger

In his 67 years, Turlough O’Carolan (1670–1738) composed and arranged an enormous number of tunes. Although famously blind, O’Carolan was born sighted, tragically losing his vision after contracting smallpox at the age of 18. He was subsequently apprenticed to a harper and began his long career as a performer and composer. There exists today a wealth of music attributed to O’Carolan, but interestingly enough much of his oevre was not written down during his lifetime. The vast majority of his compositions were passed down aurally until they were collected and published in the late 18th century, nearly 50 years after his death.
